I'm still confused to something that happened w/my dentist this week...Someone who've I've seen nearly 30 years..
Long story short, when i was a teenager i lost the enamel on my teeth (and had some other dental issues to) and subsequently they were all capped...This work was all complete around 1992 and it involved periodontal work, oral surgery, and lastly, crown work....Anyway, I've been seeing the dentist who did all the crowns 3-4 times per year for cleanings, check-ups, and one yearly x-ray....When i saw him this week, he said there was all this decay going on the one side and several teeth may need re-done...The last check-up in late 2018 was fine, I'm not having any pain or discomfort and this time he drops the decaying teeth bomb on me....So, now I'm wondering if something really did happen to my crowns in just a short time, OR is he perhaps wanting to do unnecessary work just to pad his income?.....I'm going to get another opinion from a different DMD, as he has been the only dentist I've visited in decades.....I was floored by this experience this week and just wondered if anyone else has gone thru something similar with physician or dentist you've been seeing for a long time and he/she dropped a complete surprise on you...

(20,878 posts)Had new insurance that few would take.
New dentist said I needed thousands of $ worth of work.
So, I went and got a 2nd opinion.
NOTHING WAS FOUND WRONG, NOTHING.
I've had two fillings since and that is it (this was over 10 years ago!).
I would strongly recommend that you get a second opinion ASAP!!
Greedy 'effers out there ... many of them!!!

(3,166 posts)his practice is very busy, I've been seeing him a long time, why does he need to make a fast buck off me....
And yes, I'm definitely getting that 2nd opinion...

(4,548 posts)And one essentially double charged me, I found out years later. Charged my insurance company, then charged me the same amount, saying it was my share. Insurance was supposed to pay 80%, and they did. But he padded what he charged me. I was young and dumb and he was the only dentist for miles around.

(20,878 posts)I was told I'd be needing "a mouth full of crowns" some day soon.
I have 3 crowns on my old teeth, 3!
Fact is I have excellent teeth which I care for.
My mother was the same. Not a solitary crown in her mouth and great teeth!
Great teeth is genetic it seems.
I got lucky on that one so I KNOW!

(206,415 posts)As kids, we saw the same dentist since we got teeth, but when we moved he was about an hour away. I continued to see him since I had few problems, but my mother took my brother to a local dentist since he was always needing fillings.
But then she took me to the local guy once since I was leaving for summer camp and he said I needed 9 fillings! I'd never had problems so she took me to the long time dentist and he said I needed one!
When he checked out my brother he said the local dentist was filling "worn spots," which might or might not turn into cavities. So we never went back to the local guy. And my brother has a mouth full of silver.

Someone I met was dating a dentist student and said basically they are too unchecked and he felt going to a university dentist clinic was maybe the only way to avoid unnessary work but I did find an honest private dentist finally. Surprise no work needed for years now . Ones I was seeing would have tons of work when I went for a teeth cleaning trying out a new dentist. So glad I found a good one
