We are freezing in Colorado!

Currently, Boulder County is about 20 degrees and it's snowing like crazy. It is predicted to get down to 1 F tonight with snow continuing through tomorrow. At least the snow is light enough to sweep away.

Does anyone want to add a report from your town, state, county?

I've lived in Santa Fe for nearly 11 years now, and while sometimes it's windy, no windy season. However, along the Front Range in Colorado, which includes Boulder, there is a fall and spring windy season. Gusts often over 100 mph. When I lived there, I'd listen to the wind at night, and then in the morning would listen to the local NPR station telling me what the wind gusts had been the night before. Got so I could correctly guess the wind to within 5mph.

I am a fan of violent weather.

For 18 years I lived in Overland Park, KS, and I want to say that the most violent weather I ever saw was when I lived in Kansas. Although, the only time I ever saw a funnel cloud was when I was in Boulder, CO, looking east towards Denver. Anyway, living in Kansas is giant fun and lots of excitement, what with tornado warnings and tornadoes themselves.

In 2004 I was a strong Howard Dean fan, and in May of that year went to a small meet and greet with him in Kansas City. My husband, who worked in Lawrence, KS, at the time, was unable to make it because tornadoes had passed through Lawrence and he just couldn't get away. As I recall, serious tornadoes did a lot of damage around Kansas City. My favorite memory is standing next to him on the balcony of the private home we were in, and enthusing about the Midwest weather. It was fun, because he was trying to be your basic reasonably macho guy, not obnoxious at all, but clearly not even remotely used to that kind of weather. Howard Dean was a great guy, regardless of the local weather.

I moved here nearly 11 years ago from Kansas, after a divorce. In recent years I'm inclined to say that in my fondest fantasies that my marriage had not come to an end, I don't think I could have persuaded him to move to NM.

I got to start a new life here, and it's been great.

I will always encourage others to be willing to relocate. While I can see how truly wonderful it can be to live in the same place your entire life or even for many years, I'm personally persuaded that living in different places is even better.

Here's a trivial example. Here in Santa Fe, unlike anywhere else I've ever lived, the vast majority of people use their garages to store their excess crap. Not for their cars. I good friend who has lived here since 1974 simply thinks that everyone uses their garages this way. I keep on telling him, "Not in anywhere else I've lived." Again, this is a trivial example, but it points out what is gained by living in different places.

Heck, several years ago I started getting itchy feet, and as much as I like this place I keep on thinking that it's time to move on. What mainly holds me back is that there's not some other place that is calling to me, and I'm far too aware of the financial costs of moving. I have a fair amount of stuff, and some of that stuff, like my wedding china (which was recently promoted to being my every day china) I'm not willing to give up.

In the first ten years of my marriage we moved approximately every two years, and so during that time I was good at getting rid of excess. Then we stayed put. Stuff accumulated. My personal problem is books. I have far too many of them, and I try very hard not to purchase too many, but still. . . . My excuses is that I know a lot of writers, and so of course I purchase their books. Sigh.

If you've never visited this wonderful state, try to do so. There is so very much to see and do here. And we'd all love to see you, of course.

Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration - our farm is on top of a solid red clay ridge 200 feet above sea level. But it has been the rainiest several years I can remember since I moved here in 1972, including three hurricanes (Hermione 2016, Irma 2017, and Michael 2018).

Last year was so wet the hay farmers could grow and cut lots of hay but could never cure it. They could get 2-3 days of sunshine but it would rain before the hay was dry enough to bail. If you bail wet hay it can catch fire from the internal heat so lots of hay got wasted. Now there is a shortage.

Of course, next week we're supposed to startnew terraces around the house. The limestone rocks got delivered Thursday and Friday - one dump truck almost got stuck so the rest of the rocks are not as close to the site as we'd like. The chance of rain Sunday night is 80% so I am not sure if they will be able to start the work with the saturated ground.

It just started raining again. We've gotten two inches in the last two days

My oldest mare is already covered in them - we got the spot control stuff to put on her since that is the only thing that works for her.. We never got a good freeze this winter so the ticks and mosquitoes are out early for blood.

I haven't even been over to Monticello in years. Between all the surgeries I have had in the last ten years and the several deaths in the family, getting to the neighboring towns has just not happened. Maybe next year...

All day in the 50's with intermittent sunshine. Around sunset it started raining. Almost like a gloomy, rainy afternoon in some other part of the country, which I actually love. Still raining very lightly as I type this.

Oh, and some time ago I lived in Boulder and one of the things I loved about it was that the snow was always light and I rarely had to actually shovel. Could just sweep it off the driveway and sidewalk. Well, except for the times it snowed 12 inches or more, which happened fairly often, come to think of it. But almost invariably, after a snowfall, within 48 hours it would get back up to 60 degrees and the snow was all gone. Which is why I didn't see any point in buying my kids a sled. Why bother if it wasn't going to last more than a day?

Here is why I loved living in Boulder so much: My older son was in kindergarten. Half day, he was in the morning half. The moms waiting to pick their kids up became friends, and so in January of his kindergarten year we started a thing where on Fridays, after we'd fed our kids, we'd rendezvous at a particular local park. Kids and younger siblings played, moms chatted. It was great. And here's the thing. Starting in JANUARY, we only missed 2 Fridays because one day the weather was crappy that day, and the other it was still very wet from a snowfall a couple of days earlier. Every other Friday for some five months we were able to do this.

Especially when my kids were little I judged the desirability of a place we lived by how much time they could be outside. Boulder won, hands down.

I think if I currently had little kids Santa Fe would tie. Especially as we tend to get far less snow, although we don't have the temps climbing to 60 degrees in the middle of winter. So, okay, a close second.
