marketed to teens? I did not know that, but here it is:

(146,298 posts)I do, however, have Google, which answered the question, "What does teen spirit really smell like?" with the correct information. And there I was with a completely different idea. Back in my day, deodorants were very few. And none, I'm sure, smelled like "Pink Crush."

(25,471 posts)"Cobain came up with the song's title when his friend Kathleen Hanna, at the time the lead singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall.[5][6] Hanna meant that Cobain smelled like the deodorant Teen Spirit, which his then-girlfriend Tobi Vail wore. Cobain said he was unaware of the deodorant until months after the single was released, and had interpreted it as a revolutionary slogan, as they had been discussing anarchism and punk rock."

(4,606 posts)Most teenagers and 20-somethings probably got the reference. I was a junior in hs at the time and my friends and I got it right away, thought it was funny.
That song always annoyed me because it sounded like Peace Frog was coming on:
"Ahh! ... Oh. Again. Sigh."

(146,298 posts)Somehow, though, we managed to survive our teens. There was even considerable mingling of boys and girls, despite the lack of modern antiperspirants and the like. There weren't that many products targeting teens, either. Clearasil, of course, but for things like deodorants, etc., we all tended to use products for adults, and our choices were limited.
I do remember the introduction of panty hose, though. Before that, girls wore garter belts and nylons. We didn't care. We didn't know any better at the time. Somehow, we managed, though. My steady girlfriend liked Mennen Skin Bracer aftershave on me, which I no doubt overused. She wore White Shoulders, as I remember, and switched to Jungle Gardenia as a senior.
