Boulder County here. We got heavy, horizontal snow, 8-10 inches by late tonight. It's gusting up to 30 mph presently. My work is closing at noon. Since I work nights, I usually go in at 3:00. My boss just texted me and told me to stay in bed. Don't mind if I do.
How often does THAT happen?

(15,801 posts)View from my window, looks like 3-4 inches of snow so far. Staying in jammies, staying inside. Predictably, one of the Denver stations already showed the obligatory reporter getting splattered by a snow plow. Shots of people inside the airport reminds me of a couple years ago when I got stuck at DIA overnight due to weather; feel bad for those stuck there today, there really isn't any place comfortable to wait out the storm. When I flew this last December they were remodeling most of the food services, only a couple of sandwich places were open and they were out of most ingredients; hope that's not the case for the present batch of the stranded!

(16,377 posts)I'm staying in my jams, too. Part of me has a strong urge to go to the store, though. It's only a quarter mile away. I need coffee filters and milk.

(27,808 posts)Happened to me at DTW once, they were changing the whole end of the airport and I was starving and could only find one place open. They give the concession to a management company, and they seem to have no compunction about leaving half an airport stranded without food for a month of two. Grrrr - a pet peeve!

(102,247 posts)paid a bill like this going back several years. They claim it was because of two extra days in January and the cold spell we had, but really...? We have certainly had similar cold periods before. (Oh, I have Xcel energy as my gas provider).
Xcel also suggest that I must have a malfunctioning system, but shouldn't it NOT cycle off if so? To date, I see no evidence of problems.

(16,377 posts)Mine was higher than usual at $135. My house is pretty weather tight. I am always cold so I keep my thermostat set to around 71.

(20,365 posts)my Xfinity cable box has rebooted many times. It takes several minutes to get the broadcast back. I'm watching the news on the internet. I haven't lost it yet.

(16,377 posts)I was w/o Internet for a few minutes. I don't mind the power going, but I want my Internet, LOL.

(507 posts)I have a battery backup on my computer. For every time we've lost power long enough for the lights to go out, the battery backup has clicked four or five times, indicating a microsecond power cutoff. My girlfriend had a four o'clock therapy appointment in Lafayette, but the therapy place isn't answering its phone. We presume they had the sense to go home early.

(128,926 posts)then you tend to hear the hyperbolic "bomb cyclone" maybe once or twice or more every year during winter - and especially those in New England when regular nor'easters "bomb out" north of here in Philly and NYC.
Stories about the March 2nd - 3rd 2018 one (last year) here -

There was also one January 2018 here on the east coast - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2018/01/04/historic-bomb-cyclone-unleashes-blizzard-conditions-from-coastal-virginia-to-new-england-frigid-air-to-follow/?utm_term=.952c9ab8df5b
Even had graphic satellite pics of that one!

I think the back-of-the-envelope description of it is a rapidly (truly rapid) and strongly intensifying low pressure system but you need some kind of combo of dynamics for that to happen away from the water. I think in this case the storm was drawing warm moisture-laden air up from the Gulf of Mexico and wrapping it around counter-clockwise (for low pressure systems) against the polar vortex air that is nosing down from the north and BOOM!
It really looks like a summer tropical storm that has come inland except in summer, you won't have a piece of the polar vortex just above it.

(10,127 posts)ABSOLUTELY, the most dangerous drive I have ever done. Roads south of Park Meadows area went almost unplowed. 470 toll (usually the only road to be clean all the time) all snow pack - all lanes. Parker Road S to Franktown was insane and still drifting as I write. Many, many cars, SUVs, semis(a few) stuck and off the road.
Made it home ok, but I should have gotten a hotel.
Upside, I had prepped my snow blower prior to leaving and my son took it upon himself to do the drive prior to my getting home. I could not have been able to get in otherwise. I definately let him know how much I appreciated it.
Stay warm and safe.

(102,247 posts)Not just blocked, but that wind blew frozen sleet & snow sideways so that the sides of the door were frozen closed. Geez, what mess--not to mention the solid black ice underfoot.
I guess Kansas and central midwest will have to deal with the aftermath. I-70 East is not even going to reopen today. Bizarre storm, indeed.

(102,247 posts)Fortunately, I didn't absolutely have to go into work today.
But, I've had snow block a door before, but never have it frozen solid on both sides--like an iced car door--so that it wouldn't move... Very strange.
