In spite of the shedding, the food stealing, the utter disregard for any rules, they're just big ol' bundles of pack-love.

amusedly,

Although I do cringe a little when the dog licks the baby's mouth. I kiss my dog all the time but babies have immature immune systems, so I would hold off on the licking until two-years-old. Yes, I'm a hand-wringer.

And I totally agree that we shouldn't sanitize our children's environments, that it leads to allergies, etc. Infants, older adults, and the immunocompromised are different, though, and they do need a little more protection. At least dogs' mouths are cleaner than cats; cats' have much worse bacteria according to my vet. Doesn't stop me, either, I still smooch my kitteh.
