Anybody have experience with closed caption phones?

My 97 yr old mom lives 700 miles away from me, and is stubbornly imdependent. She is seriously hard of hearing, which she knows and accepts. She does have hearing aids, but some days, they do not help much. Phone conversation is becoming a major exercise in frustration for both of us.

I would like to treat her to a closed caption phone system and would welcome any advice on this technology. Mom is preyty tech savvy for a senior - has an iPad, can text on a Jitterbug phone, and is very persistent about trying to figure things out. And, she does read directions.

Aside from any expertise you get here or on web searches, see if your state has a department for deaf and hard of hearing. They probably do. They will almost certainly have some experience with them and may be able to assist financially.

Thanks for reminding me. I wonder if I can find it.

I thought it might be this, but it ended up as a 404: https://www.vddhh.org/virginiarelay.htm

We paid extra for the compatibility with Windows XP. I'll have to see if I can recall the name.

It was this outfit: https://www.captel.com/.

She didn't use it much. She got it because a cousin had one. It was the only way the cousin could use the phone. Things have changed so much since we were in the market that I can't offer an opinion on what is the best one for you to get now. Note that the best one for you might not be the best one for someone else. You know how that works.

I guess you'll have to rely on forums and reviews at Amazon to sort this out.

Here's the current lineup of Captel phones: https://www.captel.com/captel/phones/.
