(62,451 posts)We had two little girls 2 years apart. Our cocker spaniel, Buffy, did a great job in teaching them the essentials of love and sharing. Now I have a small tear in my eye remembering 2 girls and a great dog.

(63,221 posts)That reminds me of when I was about that age - 2 1/2 to 3 years old after my mother died - and I was introduced to my father's cousin's dogs, both big German Shepherds. One was named Nimbus, and I forgot the name of the other one, but I just adored them and cuddled with them like this little girl. I couldn't get enough of them and they were so gentle and loving with me.
I think that is why I am such a dog lover now. During that time, the adults in my life did not know how to comfort me, which I needed so much, but the dogs gave me the love and affection that I needed. When my father remarried we had dogs most of that time until I went to college and they were always my emotional touchstone. To me, there is no more healing presence than that of a dog.
