The inaugural Corvettes featured red interiors, AM radios and heaters, but lacked exterior door handles.
The idea behind the Corvette came from General Motors designer Harley Earl. He saw the popularity of European sports cars and wanted to introduce an American challenger. Keeping the project largely to himself, Earl worked for roughly two years until unveiling his car at the 1953 GM Motorama show.
A total of 300 Corvettes were made in 1953 in Flint, and production moved to St. Louis, Missouri the following year. The Corvettes popularity rose after the addition of a V8 engine in 1955, and the model soon became known as Americas favorite sports car. Today, the Corvette maintains a healthy position in the sports car category as one of the top ten best-selling sports cars in the U.S. #ThisDayInAutoHeritage
