He formed a group with his sons and played at the Vietnam Moratorium Day protest in 1969. One of the few country/bluegrass artists to oppose the war. And of course a seminal figure in bluegrass.

Flying Burrito Brothers, Mandolin Orange, etc., who were what trump would call socialists or something.
But, there are a lot of white wing racists too.
