My favorite one hit wonder from my high school days was probably Bust A Move. Tough choice, though. There were many good (and often silly) dance songs on the Top 40 in the early 90's.

(4,608 posts)I remember the album this song was on as being pretty darn good. Don't know what ever became of the group. Arrested Development is another group that had a cool sound. They had a few hits, though, IIRC.
I moved back to my home town 2 weeks ago and it's fun remembering these songs. Thanks!

Relative awesomeness:
Those are ALL from 1976 alone, and ALL #1 hits.
Then there's this one from 1977 ... which is maybe my favorite 'one hit wonder' song of all time ... dudes just NAIL IT right here ...
I could definitely play this game all night ...
Maybe unfair to do this one cause this dude actually had lots of low-charting songs, and a fairly decent child-acting career actually (had guest roles as Felix's son on The Odd Couple, and was on the show Family) but mostly they were remakes ... this was his only top 10 legit 'hit' and only semi-famous non-cover ...
Another #1, this one from 1977 ... only top 40 song he had as a solo artist, though he had a hit in the band Sweeney Todd and wrote or co-wrote popular songs from some other artists like Bette Midler, Pat Benatar, and Scandal feat. Patty Smyth ...
Then there was Rupert Holmes with The Pina Colada Song ... which I don't really like so no vid on that one, also there was a song called 'Him' from the same album that peaked at #6 on the BB Hot 100 (remember that one?). He's also been a noted playwright, author, and done some Broadway scores over the years, so ... he's not unaccomplished, even if he had only 1 huge hit song.
I'd also put the band Player on the list, who had a #1 hit in 1977 with 'Baby Come Back', but the same album also yielded another top 10 hit with 'This Time I'm In It For Love' ... but it's a freaking cool song, so ...
Does anyone remember any other hits from Gerry Rafferty besides Baker Street? HA, turns out there was two others ... Right Down the Line ... and to a lesser extent, Get it Right Next Time. So he doesn't make the list!
Here's some other one-hit wonders from around that time ... Amii Stewart (Knock on Wood ... #1 hit in 1979), Kajagoogoo (Too Shy), and A Taste of Honey ... who I'll include cause I've always loved this song ...
Told ya I could do this all night
ZZenith
(4,122 posts)Until one has attempted vocal pop like this one has no idea how hard it is to pull off.
Thats 3 minutes and 56 seconds of perfection right there, before auto-tune and digital editing - just doing it over and over and over again until you get it right.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)and the freaking musicianship is incredible ... but ya the vocals on Baby Come Back are phenomenal ... great tune.
Here's another fave from that era, that I love so much cause it's live, and they just freaking NAIL IT ... NOT a one-hit wonder band, of course ... they had at least 3 huge hits, but this my fave song of theirs, and it always takes me back ... figure if you love the Player, you gotta at least like this one
ZZenith
(4,122 posts)Their first record has some of my all-time favorite tracks. Most people only know them from their pop hits but each one of them could rip it up, and that first album is a progressive masterpiece. They once jokingly lamented that the worst thing that ever happened to them was having a number one hit because no one took them seriously as musicians after that.
Totally agree on the Sanford Townsend musicianship - weve really lost something between the copy and paste tracks on a grid and the pre-recorded backing tracks. Give me a band that gets up and plays the song in real time, with every ounce of energy they have.
Christ, I have suddenly become an old geezer, bitching about Todays Music.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)and able to put their songs across live w/o too much artificial shit ... than any other kind of music.
Which is why my favorite music from 'nowadays' is generally in the 'Americana' vein ... Steve Earle, Jason Isbell, Avett Brothers, Son Volt, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Iron & Wine ... then there's Kasey Musgraves, Jenny Lewis, The War On Drugs, Kurt Vile, Vampire Weekend, and ... basically, there's still LOTS of great organic music being made, you just have to find it.
Also there are a handful of artists currently that are way more 'produced' and 'electronic' that I still really dig in 'today's music' as well ... for example, I'm a huge fan of CHVRCHES ... even though there's not a proper instrument to be seen onstage ... They legit have a lot of great songs over their first 3 albums (esp. their debut The Bones of What You Believe from 2011 ... incredible record) ... and I swear it's not just because Lauren Mayberry is a Goddess who walks among us Mere Mortals ... she actually has a PhD, or two Master's Degrees, or something along those lines ... IIRC ...

(33,643 posts)I used to just stare at the record cover, I thought she was SO FINE when I was like 6 ... one of first artists signed to Apple, pretty sure that's why my stepdad bought the record ... he was a HUGE Beatles fan. One of his best traits (as far as musical taste goes) I must say
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Since they also did 'Billy Don't Be a Hero' but I still say these guys count ... just by virtue of their overall suckiness ...
Pretty sure this dude counts as well ... this video clearly features a crowd on a lot of quaaludes
Clue me in if these dudes had any other hits, cause I definitely don't remember. But this was a jam I don't care what you say ...
