By: Corinne Sanders
Deployments are always hard on military families, but they can sometimes be even tougher for the pets. After all, animals dont understand why their owners are gone and have no idea if theyll ever come back.
Gabriel Carlos never wanted to leave his wife Charrette Padilla or his beloved dog Benny behind, but such is the sacrifice a service member makes. The soldier was deployed for the first time last year to South Korea. Charrette and Benny have been waiting anxiously for his return ever since.
Finally, after nine months away, Gabriel came back home last month. He was so happy to be with his wife again, but couldnt wait to see Benny, either.
After seeing my wife, we got into the car to head home and all I could think of next was seeing my Benny boy, Gabriel said. Sometimes people say hes a dog version of myself! He brings so much joy to everyday life.
Benny was just as excited to see Gabriel, who waited in another room to surprise him. Though he had no visual confirmation, he knew Dad was home.
Even before I opened the door, Benny could smell him and was so excited, Charrette said.
Then, as soon as she opened the door, Benny sprinted over to Gabriel and proceeded to freak out in the best possible way.
Charrette recorded his adorable reaction as he mauled his dad with kisses and cuddles, whining uncontrollably while his tail beat the air in a furious blur.
Even if hed wanted to, there was no way Benny could control the surge of happiness that overcame him. His dad was home, and hed clearly spent the last nine months missing him terribly.
Gabriel got him to calm down for a few moments on the couch
but seconds later, Benny was at it again.
Honestly, though, who could blame Benny for losing it? Hed spent so long wishing and waiting for this very moment. With Gabriel back, life was good.
Watch as Benny gives his dad a welcome home to remember in the video below. Be sure to share this sweet reunion with other dog lovers!

(51,636 posts)It doesn't matter to dogs how long since all they understand is that you are not there. Period. You are their whole world. Humans can never duplicate this.
When I was teaching First Grade at a school in a military area dads/moms and kids were always coming and going throughout the school year. Parents always told me that the happiest "I missed you" reactions when the other parent returned was from their dogs, not their kids. I saw it first hand one year when the dad came to my classroom to surprise his son. The class and I knew about this ahead of time but what surprised everyone the most was when the student was not excited to see dear ol dad but more concerned with getting his homework assignment packed up to leave early. I felt badly for his parents.

(4,033 posts)I did tech support for a medical software company and basically it consisted of my getting a problem call and then logging onto their site, figuring out what was wrong and fixing it. And I was damn good at my job. The fact that I was working from home meant no commute, so I usually ended up working 8-10 hours a day and closed more tickets than anyone else on the team. Then the CEO decided that he didn't trust 'remote employees' so we either had to relocate to corporate and commute to work each day or get fired.
Since I was only a few years from retirement and worked in a fairly small niche area of expertise we made the difficult decision to relocate. Unfortunately, I needed to be there about 3 months before the wife and our dogs could relocate with me. So, for 3 months while we found a new home, got through escrow, lined up the moving company, etc, I lived out of our RV. When it was finally time for wife, MIL, and dogs to come and all of us to move into new home, I decided to help with the drive from Cincinnati to Kansas City. However, at the time Cincinnati was one of the most expensive airports in the US to fly out of, so we agreed to meet in Indianapolis.
I flew into Indianapolis, caught a shuttle to the hotel they were staying in, went up to the room and knocked on the door. My wife opened it and our dog, Sancho, was snoozing on the back of the couch across the room. He looked up to see who was at the door and literally did a double take! He came flying off the couch like superdog, crying and jumping (something he never did) and licking me, and wending his way over, under, around, and through. I have never seen a dog so happy in my life.
So I know how our furkids respond when their human has been away and then returns. And boy does it make you feel loved!
