(10,870 posts)They must have a limit on the total length of chrome tubing allowed. As the handlebars and forks get longer, the exhaust always gets shorter.

Otherwise-I'm in trouble.

(46,327 posts)So I hear a LOT of the second bunch you mention.
I really detest these teeny over-powered cars and humungous trucks that roar past my place, even though the speed limit is 25.
I love seeing them get busted, every so often.

(14,490 posts)I have highly sensitive hearing (HSP) and they and loud pickup trucks are a constant nuisance in my low-income neighborhood. Unsolicited phone calls and neighbor's dogs add to the din. That's why I'm a night owl...
Excessively darkened windows are another pet peeve of mine and violations are rarely enforced....

The Figment
(494 posts)There is no reason to have overly loud exhaust on anything with 4 wheels, but a loud set of pipes on a motorcycle is and can be a lifesaver, people just don't see a motorcycle, especially with a lot of new cars that have Very limited vision
( Camaros,Challengers,Mustangs ect.)

(36,827 posts)While moving in traffic you dont hear them until they are in front of you which makes the whole idea worthless. Most motorcycle accidents which are a result of not seeing them are at intersections which again negates any benefit from their noise.
Not to mention the people who make that flawed argument inevitably ride without helmets and refuse to wear highly visible and reflective clothing which actually does make them safer.
The Figment
(494 posts)Which has a Nasty blind spot on my right rear quarter panel and tho you are correct in that most non visual motorcycle crashes are at intersections those "loud pipes" more than once let me know that a bike is there.
And yes I have large mirrors and do use them.
Mabey it also helps that I'm hyper aware of things like bicycles and motorcycles as I have extensive experience in riding both, and tho I believe in "let the rider decide" I use all the safety gear that is available, helmets, leathers, gloves, glasses, bright lights, and lotsa reflective gear.
Look at the upcoming wave of electric vehicles both cars and cycles, crashes with other vehicles and pedestrians is going up because "I didn't hear it"

(36,827 posts)In the roughly 40 years or so that claim has been made, nothing empirical proves that notion and that was back in the days when vehicle air conditioning wasn't as prevalent and cars didn't have near the soundproofing they have today. Motorcycle pipes are pointed backward and that's where most of the sound goes.

Over there, your 'right' to have a loud vehicle is superceded by everyone else's right not to have to listen to it on Saturday nights or Sunday mornings.
flotsam
(3,268 posts)If they put loud pipes on bikes because they're so worried about safety, why do we so often hear them at two in the morning after the bars close???
