(7,968 posts)It is taken as axiomatic but it is obviously and demonstrably false

(10,252 posts)What some call a soul, is the mammalian mind. Mammals evolved a limbic system in the brain, which creates emotions, memories and arousal (or stimulation). Reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish don't have a limbic system. "Soul" is a poetric label for what I call "mind." Generally, we don't give nearly enough credit to what mammals think and feel.

My wifes cockatiel knew when her car pulled up outside after work. He would start chirping before she came through the door.

(7,968 posts)you would also agree that humans have no souls.
Perhaps I misunderstood your post. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with whatever you want to think is true. But be careful. One thing that I have learned in my 61 years is that no one really knows the truth. Many claim to but none actually know.

(10,252 posts)What we in the west call "soul," Asians call "mind." Clearly we have a mind, but you cannot find it. Western psychology and western neuroscience have a lot to say about how the mind works, and which parts of the brain and the neuro system do what. Then there is Buddhist psychology about how the mind works and different levels of consciousness at which the mind operates. I prefer to leave soul as a poetic concept.

(794 posts)The problem/danger in all these sweet interactions is that animals usually do not know their strength. Do not grasp what the human may feel in pain.
Recall the horse that bit off the hand of the girl her 5-yr-long friend--not because the horse was angry, but being 'friendly and not knowing. Likewise, the pet raccoon that scratched out an eye--merely wanting hug/cuddles.
Bears do not like to be cuddled--their 'kiss' may be your cheek. It was a very nice bear, long acclimated to humans, but...story too gruesome.
Animals do have emotions--fear, anger, wanting comfort, feeling safe, maybe love. Our own emotions evolved from earlier brains.
Pain, hunger, warmth, of course.
It is wrong to dismiss that fish do not feel pain, yet that is the standard view.
