So my latest doggos of my lifetime...
The lady/chihuahua is 13 years old and now has tumors on the breasts. She doesn't act like she's in pain. O.K., so she's *intact* and all these years never did the thing. Do not ask me how I know. I know. Her partner, a mini-dachsund was too short, O.K.?!1 (Well, short in height, not in the particular department.)
But I digress. So the vet told me that the reason Lady Chi now has tumors is that she's intact AND that the dog food is CHICKEN and/or BEEF!1
All these years I've thought I was always doing the best, always looked for the NUMBER ONE INGREDIENT, and thought that chicken or beef were the best.
So he told me to get LAMB or SALMON or DUCK.
*********It's always SOMETHING MORE!1
Fine, so I've already discontinued the thing they've been happy with for 13 years (the younger one, 2).
*********LAY IT ON ME, Lounge, go ahead.

(4,606 posts)when she was of similar age. The doc didn't say anything about beef and chicken, just that the mammary glands eventually harden on unspayed, senior females and it's harmless. This was many years ago, back when there were few choices of dry dog food and it was all made grains and mill waste products. I highly doubt there was any animal-based protein in her food.
We did have Jenny's removed, and if I remember correctly, it was simply for her comfort. They were hard like marbles.
If it were me, I wouldn't change foods. The chicken/beef thing sounds wonky, and your dogs are happy with their food. JMO.
