Today is National Lighthouse Day. According to the National Park Service, on this day 230 years ago Congress approved an act to establish and support lighthouses. Here's a collection of 40 photos from The Associated Press archives.

We were there July 26:



Here is a small lighthouse across the harbor from where the Queen Elizabeth was docked:



And one on an island as we left Halifax that evening:



And the one at St. John's, Newfoundland across from Signal Hill at the entrance to the harbor:



Not a lighthouse - a windmill on Vigur Island near Ísafjörður (great place to see puffins, arctic terns (homicidal arctic terns) and other birds:
