(11,301 posts)I've ranted (along with everyone else) about "abject stupidity." Now I'm asking for opinion/explanation. Is there some reason why people absolutely REFUSE to listen to warnings about this?
(this guy is actually behind a fence .. and there is a crowd .. and cameras .. all contributing factors in a decision to risk serious injury or death .. but, hey .. you do you!)
I was a NPS ranger there and I could only come up with one hypothesis beyond the "just plain stupid and disrespectful" reason.
So, here goes...
Visitors to YNP come from everywhere... and that everywhere is at roughly 3500ft above sea level or lower. The elevation at this particular park starts at 5000+ft above sea level and at times you will reach heights above 9000ft where there is less oxygen and therefore, far too little oxygen for the functioning of brain cells available at this elevation which results in the inability to think clearly or, as experience proves, drive among many other impairments. Seriously, it's either base desperation or lack of oxygen or both (along with severe stupidity of course).
We locals simply use alternate routes to get anywhere during "the season" which includes long FS dirt roads to avoid serious injury due to tourists who can't drive at this elevation (doesn't matter whether they can drive at all, they can still rent cars ad RVs which means they are dangerous).
