Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsGuys, I just had black, unsweetened coffee and I have to say.....
.....it's actually pretty terrible.
And this is coming from someone who has loved coffee for decades. But without milk or cream, or sugar or sweetener, it's basically just liquid dirt that wakes you up.

(33,643 posts)I've had some black coffee I found actually quite tasty. Others, yeah ... not so much.
I also prefer w/cream and sugar though.

(15,124 posts)The grounds were "settled" to the bottom by tossing just-emptied egg shells into the pot when moved to the edge of the coals. (Found out later it is the albumen in the residual egg white that "coagulates" the grounds)
I've drunk it black since then.

(3,430 posts)...was for unsweetened black coffee. I do like it au lait with almond milk, and of course please enjoy yours with five Torani syrups, whole milk, whip cream and crushed oreos.

(32,126 posts)Coffee. Cream. Real sugar.
Dont give me any weird tootie frootie flavors.
And, black coffee is better than no coffee at all.
sdfernando
(4,947 posts)it is best to have it freshly brewed at a coffeehouse (preferably NOT Starbucks). Also, you will want a nice little head of crema. No, that isn't cream, its the little bit of foam on top of an espresso shot (https://www.thespruceeats.com/what-is-coffee-crema-765688).
You can also try adding Cardamon to your coffee. It reduces coffee acidity and adds an interesting flavor.

(12,904 posts)Dont ever ask me to make you coffee. I have been told that is not drinkable.
spinbaby
(15,092 posts)But I like bitter flavors such as extra dark chocolate. Also, it has to be decent coffee. I like Dunkin, which I buy in big bags from Costco and brew in a simple pour over coffee maker. I find any coffee from a Keurig to be off and undrinkable black.

(16,390 posts)My first cup of coffee in the morning is much like a hummingbird juice. I need both the caffeine and sugar to wake up. After that first cup, I just put a small splash of vanilla creamer in it and I'm good.

I think the freshness, plus the china cup makes the difference.

(17,651 posts)....coffee grounds into a pot of boiling water. remove from burner and skim off foam and grounds from the top..pour into a cup with some sugar. I added the cream years later ( it has to be heavy cream!). I havent drank it unsweetened since.
But if i have to drink it black, it has to be strong.

(10,435 posts)From time to time I try black coffee to see if it's become one of those things I used to dislike but now like. Hasn't happened yet.
I always add some half & half, although I could do without it if I had to. But I also get good coffee, grind the beans fresh, and make it in a French Press or percolator. If I have heavy cream leftover from cooking, I'll put in a little of that to use it up. That's probably my favorite way to have coffee.
Powdered creamer tastes crappy. Those flavored creamers are delicious, almost like dessert. But I generally only use them at the gas station to make inferior coffee drinkable. At a coffee shop or good restaurant, I just want cream. Good coffee doesn't need flavored creamers.

(51,308 posts)I only buy the bold Italian or French roasts.
I got in the habit in France years ago, and I love it black and strong. I dont like sugar, so none of that either.
SeattleVet
(5,481 posts)Italian or French roast, fresh ground and I've been using a French press lately.
If I'm out and stop off at a coffee shop I always ask for the tallest dark roast they have, and usually have them add a double shot of espresso (just to help get my heart started).
(BTW - Trader Joe's Italian Roast is *very* good!)

(3,266 posts)a higher quality bean like Peets or Gevalia, (I and the Mr are addicted to Starbucks Sumatra), bought whole and ground fresh, and a clean coffee maker - experiment with the coffee-to-water ratio, and I know youll come to love black coffee.

(32,833 posts)Sugar ruins coffee, and cream isn't needed if you're making high-quality Colombian coffee.
Since my college days, I learned early on that great-tasting coffee doesn't need anything added. If stuff has to be added to make it drinkable, then I'll skip coffee and drink something else instead.
