Been hearing this from friends. Encountered myself this morning.
Going through the self service line at the grocery. Over eager clerk that insists on ringing up your items. Taking twice as long as you would, not putting your customer appreciation card in that gives you discounts. I had to step around her. Even then she told me how to do it.
Am I the only one here?

(121,860 posts)I hate self-service checkout. Half the time they don't work properly and you have to get a human to help anyhow. And they take away jobs.

(6,212 posts)I never use them either. When they don't work it takes longer for someone to fix the problem than going through a check out with a cashier. Plus it does take away jobs.

(18,254 posts)At the other registers it is much easier to go through when you have a couple of items.I also like to check my own prices. That way you can catch a mistake.

(6,316 posts)They do take away jobs. As I look into my crystal ball, I see only self-service checkouts in grocery stores.

There are always clerks if you run into problems. Some stores are now putting scales and ticket machines in the produce section.
Meijer seems to be ahead with computers.

(42,649 posts)What about when cardiac issues happen in the grocery check out line? No clerk means no help with those cardiac issues.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Most people don't know this, but if you scan your loyalty card, put one hand on the scanner/scale, your other hand on the bagging shelf, then the checkout machine will actually defibrillate you.

(17,644 posts)You know the part you're supposed to separate and send back with a check? Now on some there's a little illustration of a scissors. You have to get up and find the scissors, cut the bill apart, send it in. I guess it costs the company something to have perforations on a bill. Also, why do they make you write in the amount you're paying on the stub? Just look at the check! That's the amount I'm paying. Anyway, there are bigger issues out there...

(4,285 posts)There is one person at a pharmacy who knows exactly what to say just before I start pushing buttons. It's like she thinks I can't read or 4 seconds for me to know what the system wants me to enter (these checkout systems are not all the same.!) I just started paying in cash to shut off the instructions.
I know they have to comply with company protocol, help low vision customers, and distracted customers, but f*** I cannot figure out why I seen to need extra help.

(5,250 posts)After nearly a decade of not working I recently started again, waiting tables at a very casual place. It's fun, my coworkers and guests are great, we have a huge outdoor seating area, and we get really, really busy some nights. Weekend days, too.
Anyhoo, as I've gotten my server groove back, one of my old pet peeves has returned: people who order tap water and don't drink it. Even worse, when one person orders water for the whole table of 10 and no one (but the person who ordered) drinks any of it because they all order tea or soda. Ugh.
It may not seem like a big deal and, yes, my job is to bring people stuff, but hauling full, wasted (cough FREE cough) drinks back and forth annoys the hell out of me. It's an extra trip to bring all the waters that you know only one or two people will drink, if you are lucky, and then it makes bussing the table a pita because there are like 1000 cups on the table that cannot be stacked because they are extra full after the ice melted from sitting there, untouched, while everyone ate their meal. That one little thing can really slow you down when you are super busy. And it's wasteful.

I understand Preachers are really bad at this at the Buffets.

(5,250 posts)Years ago I had two regulars who did that. Being a passive aggressive smartass, on their third visit I brought them a pitcher of water, a bowl of lemons and an extra bowl of sugar packets. They thought it was great and made sure to sit in my section every week. And they started leaving me a big tip.

(107,187 posts)crushed two packages of WASA crackers (which are not cheap, mind you) trying to fully/better expose the bar code. This was unnecessary, mind you. I've purchased them plenty of times before and one need only lightly hold the package over the scanner.
She then proceeded to double ring up two items, which was obvious to me because she "swung" them across twice each time.
After arguing with her that she had done so, I had to get a manager to correct the total, at which point I was already more than 15 minutes in above and beyond what checking out would have taken if I'd been left alone.
Then there was the experience at Sam's Clubs "new/improved" self-checkouts where the woman grabbed my hand-held scanner as I was just starting to check out, became distracted when the customer beside me had some difficulty and proceeded to scan all their items to MY machine, which she proceeded to start scanning again on my purchases, not allowing me to take the hand scanner back.. Once again, an argument that that had happened, requiring a manager and at least 10 minutes to make it right.
So, no. I don't want THEIR help.

(5,250 posts)Cashiers and ATMs handing you money that is not bankfaced. I know it's not a big deal, I can take a second and right it all before putting it in my wallet, and there are much more important matters to be concerned about, but it bugs the hell out of me.

(17,753 posts)When I worked at Sears, as a teen, you had to face all your bills when you turned in your drawer or the head cashier would send you a nasty gram via Human Resources.
The first job I had where I handled a lot of cash, the business owner was also an accountant. Everyone got called in his office at some point and yelled at for handing in a messy cash-out. Ever since my dressing down, I've been fanatical about bankfacing- and that was nearly 30 years ago.

(63,221 posts)It's kind of nice. I used to be so impatient and annoyed all the time for the littlest things. Things still get on my nerves from time to time, especially at work, but I am able to let it go pretty quickly and I never hold a grudge. I just find that it's not worth it anymore. I am the only one it really damages, so what's the point?

People who don't understand what 'Yield' means. There are roundabouts/traffic circles all over the place here and too many drivers treat the yield signs as stop signs. I moved back to my home county at the beginning of July and hated all the new roundabouts at first, but now I love them. Except for the non-yielders.
"Yield, people, yiiieeeld." <--- me, several times a day.
