A pair of Great Horned Owls occasionally visits our back yard. It's quite special when we get a chance to observe them.

I can really believe that fairy tale at the end. Owls can be merciless to weaker creatures! I have experienced their talons--you do NOT want to deal with those without heavy leather!

A great horned owl named Simon and a saw whet owl named Owen (after my son). I’m on the board of directors of Raptors of the Rockies....both owls had important owl shit to do today, for real!

we didn't know if he was dead or alive

it was so so terrible. he was about the size of the owl in the 4th picture, golden yellow brown.

we didn't know what to do so we just watched.

very thankfully - he eventually stood up, rested awhile, then flew off.

beautiful animal.

we were afraid that approaching him would terrify him and force him to try to flee before he was ready to move on his own.

but there is something freaky about that top photo -- look at the wall behind it. There is corner in one, and not in the other. Photoshop or just an optical illusion?

I read somewhere that they are deadly silent. You won't even hear the whoosh of the wings.

headlights hit something sitting(?) near the edge of the road. At first I thought it was a big bobcat. It was almost as tall as the hood of my Impala. I got about five feet from it, and it took off! BIGGEST F'ing OWL I've ever seen! I would swear the wingspan was seven feet! Really a beautiful bird!

I was taking the garbage out one night to the big old wooden garage. I opened the door and flipped on the light. This HUMONGOID owl flew out right over my head. Scared the crap out of me. Like everybody in that neck of the woods, we had a problem with packrats in outside buildings. He was awaiting dinner.
