Generations and passing torches

At my elder daughter's wedding in the wine country near Rüdesheim on the Rhein last month (the civil ceremony was held in NYC the month before), among the many images that stuck in my memory (before we get all the images organized) are these three:

My younger daughter, who doesn't believe in marriage (but has a daughter, see below), but had the time of her life organizing her sister's marriage, here in a rare "the two of us" moment:

8. My grandfather used to live for visits with our daughters.

He loved the was they would snuggle up to him on the couch, one on either side. They at age 7 and 5, and he at age 96. He said each time that it used to depress him that he had to wait another year for their next visit.

3. what winery?

have a good friend who does the Xmas market in Rüdesheim, though she is from upstream. even I know the area a bit after a couple of trips. the wine museum is interesting if a bit dusty - and when we went there they were hosting a wedding. I have some pictures somewhere.

also isn't there a famous brandy place there? my memory is gone at the moment.

6. Kloster Eberbach

The Kloster itself is where "The Name Of The Rose" was filmed.

As for brandy--you're out of my area of expertise. I don't drink alcohol at all, so most information about it goes right above my head without even looking down.

9. oh yes, went there a couple of times (bought the book from the gift shop and then came home

and watched the movie after asking my son about it - as of course I had never heard of it LOL)

my friend knows a man nearby who has carriage horses, (she hired him for several years to transport visitors for a local festival). we went for a long ride all over the area and then stopped at the Kloster for a break. went back by car to buy some wine (a little pricey but the place is famous) and got tickets for some strange historical light and (recorded) music show one evening.

10. One advantage of not drinking

I remember a lot of the details.

One disadvantage of not drinking--when people talk about the subject, I have no clue what the discussion is about!

I was visiting an old family friend this past weekend and he is a serious alcoholic, but man his memory is sharp as a tack! me...I raised 3 kids and blame all brain failure on that!
