"When I Dream" is a song written by Sandy Mason Theoret, and recorded by American country music artist Crystal Gayle. It was released in April 1979 as the third single and title track from the June 1978 album When I Dream. The song reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.[1]. The song was originally released on her 1975 eponymous debut album and was re-recorded for her 1978 album.

Songwriter Sandy Mason Theoret, whose work was recorded by Crystal Gayle, Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, John Prine, George Jones and more, passed away on April 1 due to complications from pancreatic cancer.
Ms. Mason was 71, and had moved from Nashville to Ormond Beach, Fla., shortly after her diagnosis.
She was a positive force and a sweetheart of a lady, says songwriter Shawn Camp. I never saw her without a smile.
A Pennsylvania native, Ms. Mason was an entertainer from a young age, learning piano, guitar and ventriloquism.
In 1967, Ms. Masons single There You Go, released on Hickory Records, peaked at No. 64. She released material for other labels, contributed background vocals to several artists records and in recent years would release several of her own albums, but she found her greatest success as a songwriter.
Crystal Gayles 1979 recording of Ms. Masons When I Dream would hit No. 3 on the country charts and cross to the adult contemporary charts as well. The song would also be recorded by Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson and many more. ....

(70,695 posts)At this VFW, totally hokey kareoke raffle place, and I've got my earbuds on listening to talkshow radio (but hearing the live stuff "singing" in the background), local, then my TALENT-dar *froze* me with this lady singing THIS song.
I turned to see who was singing, and it was an elderly woman, *clearly* knowing what she was doing, totally in tune, totally self-contolled, with this STUNNING song, which I had never heard before. Had to google from a piece of the lyrics, and Crystal GAYLE came up (I don't like her version)j, then googled "composer" and this person, came up.
********Now, here's an update on my diatribe against LYRICS, that only MELODY matters. Well, I hold this always true, but when there's a perfect melody far be it from me to deny it when perfect lyrics happenstance to it.
So that old lady sang (PERFECTLY, I might add), and I applauded (the only one who did, and I am an OLD man).
