when he said that Marvel movies are not cinema. I tend to agree with him, but I would go further. What we're seeing is the corporatization of movies, and I'd throw music in there as well.
Everything is predictable. Give the audience exactly what it wants to maximize profits and minimize risks. That's not to say that the Marvel movies are not entertaining in their own way. They are, but I don't want EVERY movie to be nothing more than duplicates. I love pizza, but I don't want to eat it every night.

(4,858 posts)...the 30s and 40s. Mayer, Cohn and the Warners weren't exactly shy about doing anything to get people into the theaters. As for the Marvel films--well, obviously, no one in their right minds wants all movies to be like them. But the Marvel films are a genre, like Westerns or private eye films. They gave us Shane, and Rio Bravo, and the Big Sleep and Out of the Past. If superhero films can give us something on that level, I'd be happy. The Black Panther isn't all that far away from that level of quality. As for the trend in general...well, as my Mom used to say, This Too Shall Pass. (And as a Marvel fan since 1961, it's very disconcerting to see your own particular pop-culture obsession being adopted by the Big Public. Grrr. It spoils the fun...)

(6,024 posts)But yeah, theyre not exactly high art and a lot of them are derivative and boring. The few exceptions in my mind are the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy and Joker, which i thought was a fantastic movie. Normally though, companies like Disney only know how to do cash grabs and real cinema is not a part of their product offering. When superhero movies are up for best picture, you know things have gotten bad.
I like being surprised by movies with unique plots and good plot twists. Sadly, the independent film craze has mostly ended, but there are still some great low budget and thought provoking movies out there.

On the other hand, I have a serious problem with Francis Ford Coppola calling Marvel movies "despicable." That's coming from the ass-vacuum who made sure Victor Salva remained employed in Hollywood after his release. He doesn't get to lecture anyone on what's "despicable."
Disclaimer: Screw the snobs, I love Marvel movies. You can enjoy whatever period dramas or slasher flicks or art-farts or antique 2D animation classics float your boat--I enjoy some of each as well, believe it or not--but any ten-year-old franchise that can consistently appeal across gender and generation to evoke such emotion as demonstrated below deserves a little respect.
