At least they can't blame me for the turkey fail.

We are at our younger son’s apartment for Thanksgiving dinner, along with his girlfriend, and one good buddies from his college soccer days. He planned to take responsibility for the turkey. It has been in the oven well over an hour, and they just realized that the oven is off. I distinctly recall telling my husband to turn the oven on at least a couple of hours ago.

Edited to add that this is the son who used to think he wanted to own a restaurant!

One Thanksgiving at my sister’s house, our family had gathered for the holiday. Although my sister and our mother loved one another, they had a combative relationship.

As they were planning the meal, they argued. When they went shopping, they argued. As they prepared the big dinner, they argued. The rest of us knew it was better to stay out of the kitchen.

When it was time to eat, it was my job to carve the turkey. It was a big bird that was perfectly golden brown. I sharpened the knife and set about slicing the beast. Except I couldn’t sever the limbs. I tried slicing the breast but about a half inch in, I discovered the problem: the turkey was still frozen inside! With all of their arguing, my mom and sister had forgotten an important detail.

Amid the ensuing chaos, my brother-in-law called a Chinese restaurant and we felt like Ralphie’s family in A Christmas Story!

I distinctly remember telling my husband to turn the oven on about an hour before my son planned to put the turkey in. What happened after that, I do not know.
