The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI've been invited to join a secret society!!
Dear Coventina,
This is a personal letter just to you. Notice: this is not a mass mailing; this letter came to you by first-class mail, not by third-class bulk mail. This is not a solicitation for money. In fact, you will get something of immense value from us ABSOLUTELY FREE with no strings attached. So, read every word very carefully because you will never get another letter from us again.
Coventina, please keep what I tell you secret, because this information is confidential. These words are meant for you only.
There has existed for many years an exclusive association, a secret society, of some of the world's most famous and powerful people. These include renowned actors and musicians, leading scientists and intellectuals, self-made entrepreneurs and artists, millionaires, professional gamblers, Casanovas, statesmen. Many of these people you would instantly recognize.
This association has uncovered some shockingly powerful secrets. And they share these secrets only amongst themselves. In fact, these secrets are the reason these well-known individuals have achieved great prosperity.
Coventina, I have some incredibly exciting news to share with you. The association has analyzed your profile (you'd be unbelievably flattered if you knew who these individuals were), Please forgive us, but we've discovered something special about you.
It seems you, Coventina, possess several rare traits we are searching for. Because of these traits, which we'll talk about later, you are eligible to become part of our exclusive club and to share our Greatest Secrets, too, ABSOLUTELY FREE!
(it goes on for about 10 more pages).

(32,767 posts)There's some kind of a scam religious organization that sent letters like this to my brother, and he ended up sending them money. (!!!) He won't tell us how much he sent them, but they sent him religious books and a lot more junk mail. I'm convinced it's a scam of some kind.
Coventina
(27,172 posts)I'm sure it is a scam.
I was highly amused by it, but less so now that I know it's caused some actual harm.

(32,767 posts)I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing this group stays just to the inside edge of the "legal" boundaries.
Plus they send their mail to the out-of-state suckers lists. Fewer lawsuits that way.
