I think Luke & Han are lucky Leia took over their "rescue" on the Death Star or it would've been a very short movie.

You've got to be taught to hate and fear
You've got to be taught from year to year
It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade
You've got to be carefully taught
You've got to be taught before it's too late
Before you are six or seven or eight
To hate all the people your relatives hate
You've got to be carefully taught
Rogers and Hammerstein (1949) still ring true, today.

(66,381 posts)I remember Halloween, 1977. I dressed up as C-3PO, and my brother wore an upturned plastic trash can modified to look like R2-D2.
Everywhere we went while trick-or-treating, we saw girls dressed up as Princess Leia, wearing the side-buns hairstyle with varying degrees of success. Never once did I or my brother think that was somehow wrong. Princess Leia is a character in Star Wars. Why shouldn't girls emulate her strength and heroism?

(302 posts)When THE FORCE AWAKENS opened which featured a female lead, the toy commercial tie-ins often featured little girls in prominent roles. Those commercials are all collected on Youtube. I watched one of those compilations back then and some guy complained that they were being "politically correct" by giving girls equal time. I pointed out that Princess Leia was always a main character in the original films and some people even in 1977 found her controversial because of her take charge persona.

(34,136 posts)And outranked Skywalker and Solo. Seriously, while Luke was a farm boy and Solo a smuggler, Leia was already a member of the Imperial Senate and a leader of the Rebellion.
In my mind saying that "Star Wars is for boys" means that the boys like losers who need a smart and talented woman to get them to do the right thing.
