Unclaimed Property

There are websites where you put in your info and find out if you have any money or unclaimed property somewhere that you forgot about, or didn’t know was owed to you.

Maybe you opened a savings account via payroll deduction and then quit or moved ... forgetting about the money (because it was automatically deducted and you never gave it much thought). Maybe your crazy Aunt Matilda left you her dust bunny collection, and her attorney’s been looking for you.

I’ve tried them over the years and never found anything. Nada. Zilch.

Recently a local TV station did yet another story on these websites, so I tried one more time.
BINGO !

Well, a small “bingo”. The state of Florida had $186.53 they were holding for me. (Apparently interest does not accumulate over the years) Why and from where, I do not know. There was no explanation as to the source. My only connection to the state were the several times my ex and I visited her brother in Tampa, and we used credit cards for everything.

I had to provide the State of Florida ‘Division of Unclaimed Property’ proof of my identity, and I got the check in today’s mail.
$186.53 isn’t a lot, but as an old boss of mine used to say:
“It’s better than a poke in the eye”

Got back 350.00 from Ford (I guess a final payment I didn’t need to make), 72 dollars from a bank and 14 dollars from a credit card company that went belly up. You do have to provide some documentation, but it was easy and not time consuming.

About 15 years ago a friend found a life insurance policy his mother had left in his name as beneficiary.
This was about 10 years after she passed.

I never asked, and he never said how much it was for.

But I knew the woman for about 20 years, and she had insured her two sons for $50,000 each.
I'm guessing she insured herself for at least that, which he got.

While there are companies that will "help" you search of unclaimed property, they will charge you for finding if there is any out there. Just search for you state and "unclaimed property" and you should find a site.

For Florida, it is: https://www.fltreasurehunt.gov/

In general, look for a site that has .gov at the end of the URL.

ETA - Hah! I was sure there was no unclaimed property in my name. It turns out there are "unclaimed" checks from Epson! I suspect that they are rebate checks, and the reason they didn't arrive in my mailbox is that the town is incorrect. Some years back the Post Office closed the tiny PO office in the tiny town of Miccosukee and re-assigned it to my area. Many companies did not update their databases for ages. The address for me is correct except it shows Miccosukee, so the checks never arrived.

I thought they had been stolen out of my street mailbox, which is one reason I don't use it for sensitive mail. That all goes to my PO Box. My street box is not visible from anywhere on my property and is not secure at all.

Go here first and read up on the process:

Link: https://treasury.ky.gov/unclaimedproperty/Pages/Unclaimed-Property-Search.aspx

and, it says on that page you will proceed to this site:

Link: https://www.missingmoney.com/en/

(anyone can go directly to that site and search with your name and/or business name in any city you may have lived in)

From the KY.GOV site, it says:

Search for Unclaimed Property

Kentucky's Unclaimed Property Fund is managed through Missing Money, a national database of unclaimed property. Missing Money is a partnership between the Kentucky State Treasury, The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, and Avenu. The partnership employs the latest technology to provide nationwide search services. Claimants are able to print an official claim form on their home printer. Using the steps below, Kentuckians can search the Missing Money database and determine if they or a loved one has property to claim.

I would assume all states use the same national data base but with differing means of going through the steps for making a claim.

Thanks for the OP, L-O-C............

On the site where I found my money, most states were on it.
But a handful of states required you to contact the state site directly.

Mine did not require proof of residency. It required proof of my identity.
