Coronavirus precautions around Europe

Schools and universities are being closed and concerts, conferences and sporting events cancelled

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/04/coronavirus-precautions-around-europe

By far the worst European outbreak: more than 3,000 confirmed cases so far and 107 deaths. The virus has spread to all but one of Italy’s 20 regions, with the majority of cases in Lombardy, followed by Emilia-Romagna and Veneto. Most Italian regions have under 50 confirmed cases.

Having already placed 11 towns in lockdown and closed schools in Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont, the government will now put more towns in quarantine and close all schools and universities across Italy until mid-March. It is also considering closing cinemas and theatres and banning public events that “entail the concentration of people and do not allow for a safety distance of at least one metre”. People have been told to refrain from greeting each other by kissing on the cheek and hugging, to avoid crowded places. Those over 75, over 65 with a health problem, and anyone with respiratory problems have been advised to stay at home. The new guidelines also warn people not to drink from the same cups or bottles as anyone else.

The Venice carnival was cut short this weekend and many smaller carnivals have been cancelled. Performances at the La Scala opera house in Milan have been halted, and Milan fashion week was closed to the public. Important trade fairs such as the Milan furniture fair and Bologna’s children’s book fair have been postponed, and all sporting fixtures of any description cancelled in the so-called red zone (the northern regions most affected). Several Serie A football matches have been postponed and future fixtures may be played behind closed doors.

In the US, your fate is in Mike Pence's hands. Yikes!

Even though the map shown at the link shows that I am situated right in the major spread area, I am SO much happier to be here where competence and science are respected among our leaders rather than in the US where idiocy and religious lunacy dominate.

It's in Dense's hands because not believing in science, (which really about knowledge rather than mere beliefs) will make sciency things simply disappear into the Empyrean. Poof!

with all the hand-shaking they are continuing to do, Dense (good one!) & First Ignoramus will both contract the disease.

At best, they might have to be quarantined or self-isolate. At worst, ...! Just think of all the Trumpers they will also have infected!

Unfortunately, spreading the disease will not be good for the rest of us. So I hope that some sanity will prevail somehow.

Not a great deal is happening aside from playing a few basketball games behind closed doors.

Other than that it's business as usual while the numbers of infected continue to rise. By the time any substantial measures are taken it will be too late to stop the spread I think, possibly already too late.
Hope I'm wrong but not confident at all by the response I'm seeing so far.

I'm scheduled to meet friends - who left the US Tuesday - in Barcelona next Wednesday. Their report from Madrid was that all seems well there.

I am still planning to go - unless my flight is cancelled or the situations in Switzerland and Spain change drastically, or I catch a cold. My husband is having fits about my decision, but I believe that I'm likely to be as safe in Barcelona as I am near Geneva.

We'll only be in Barcelona a couple days, with a visit to Montserrat scheduled as well, and will then go to Switzerland together, if all goes as planned. Fingers crossed here!

If we make it to Switzerland and the situation changes so that they are stuck here, I have an apartment full of books, some decent cable TV, and lots of DVDs as well as Netflix and Amazon Prime options. Oh, and food!!!

It helps a LOT that we're all retired with grown children and don't have to worry about work schedules. I do not envy those who must worry about such things and remember those days well. I also have great sympathy for those whose vacation plans have had to be cancelled, etc.

Stay healthy!

And the messaging from the government is obviously designed not to create panic but reads like they have their head in the sand which is probably why most people seem oblivious about how bad this could get.
I mean sure they are taking what they know about seriously but when they say it's still in containment the very next thing they say is 'there are still 12 cases of unknown origin' and they are testing people who died weeks ago and are getting positive results back.

It doesn't seem to actually be contained at all and the numbers are going up by more each day. I'm personally getting a bit concerned by it and think this weekend might be the last time we as a family unit can go shopping and out for lunch together.
My wife works for a large international organisation which I really hope next week they will tell staff to telework but of course if they do that it'll only be because someone else tested positive so that is not encouraging either.

I don't know and I hope I'm wrong but I reckon it's going to get worse pretty quickly. Today they are starting to activate more measures than before and the tone seems a bit more serious too.

Traveling anywhere is a tough call atm, I'd monitor it right up until you have to leave as it's a very fluid situation. If you have google chrome to translate it or can read Spanish then El Pais has a live blog running all day and night which is probably the most reliable for current news in regards to the virus situation here https://elpais.com/sociedad/2020-03-06/ultimas-noticias-del-coronavirus-en-directo.html
Just monitor the situation, see what airlines are doing and if any measures are introduced by governments to self/quarantine people travel from Spain or Switzerland like they have with Italy and such.
I am a bit of a worrier though so there is that, lol. I'm sure it'll be not too bad.

Also thankyou and same to you, stay healthy and have safe travels.

for the El Pais link!

I will certainly check it out. I'm monitoring the situation pretty closely both here and in Spain.

I still have more confidence in the health authorities here than in anything that Pence is "coordinating." If he and Trump would just let competent people do their jobs without interfering, things would be MUCH better. I am MUCH more concerned about my children and their families in the US than I am about myself. Like you and your family, they have to work and interact with others on a daily basis, whereas I am able simply to stay home and loll around.

Life here is pretty much proceeding as usual although I did notice that some of the shelves in one of the major chain supermarkets seemed barer than usual while I was shopping on Wednesday.

Having Geneva cancel the Annual Motor Show and events like it are REALLY a BIG deal around here. This situation has provoked one of the rare occasions where the Swiss federal government flexed its muscle and overrode the cantonal governments, which are generally more powerful.

I credit that in part to the fact that Switzerland currently has a woman president.
