My wife’s been on them when she was younger we have friends that take them a lot.

I never saw the attraction.

What could be relaxing about that?

In my view, these cruises allow people to sit and eat, and "visit" other countries while staying in a floating luxury hotel. The passenger can choose minimal interaction with actual people rom the foreign countries that are "visited".

If you want to visit many of the Hawaiian Islands as opposed to hanging out in Oahu

If you want to island hop in the south pacific or the Caribbean a cruise is the way to go
Same for more exotic locations like the Galapagos islands.

Other options are much more expensive and require frequent packing and unpacking

The river boat cruises might be more fun because you aren't stuck on a vast floating hotel with hundreds or even thousands of people and you can get off every day for sightseeing. But I have no interest in these enormous things where you're at sea most of the time and there's nothing to do but eat and drink and see the same kind of nightclub shows you could find on land, and you don't have many opportunities to spend time on shore actually interacting with the people who live there. I'd rather take a trip where I was somewhere else for real and not spending most of the time in the equivalent of a huge hotel with a bunch of old Americans just like me.

but I agree with the sentiment. When they got as big as an aircraft carrier, I kinda lost my interest.

They are on the Star Princess Cruise ship as I type this. Probably had no problem deciding to cruise to Hawaii after watching faux news. My wife was pissed they went on the cruise. Oh well!

But I went on one of those large boats in 2001 with 3000 people. We hated it and it got me off of going on cruises for a long time. If I go on a cruise it will only be on a small boat. We were looking for a cruise to go on in the fall in Europe and now waiting and seeing where this goes. We might take a bus tour instead of Ireland and Scotland.
