The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumshow much in liquid measurement is one 400 IU of Vitamin E?
I have to measure three gel caps of Vitamin E for homemade handsanitizer and I purchased the liquid form, instead of the pills. The Vitamin E is used as a preservative.
Any chemists in the Lounge?

(18,402 posts)Vitamin E: 1 IU is the biological equivalent of 0.67 mg d-alpha-tocopherol, or 0.9 mg of dl-alpha-tocopherol.

(4,400 posts)One is a measure of substantiated efficacy; one a measure of volume/mass - so "density" or "viscosity?" Following for better response or actual factual answer. I take it there was no label on the liquid vitamin as to appropriate daily dosage? Because this is a fat-soluble vitamin, a "safe" dose is important as it sticks around and can bio-accumulate in the liver.
Also found this, so you might have a different problem: https://sciencing.com/convert-between-iu-mg-mcg-8298314.html
Vitamin E: Vitamin E is available in two formats: d-alpha-tocopherol, a natural source, and dl-alpha-tocopherol, a synthetic source. One IU of d-alpha-tocopherol equals 0.67 mg. Converted to micrograms, it equals 670 µg. The dl-alpha-tocopherol formulation contains 0.9 mg vitamin E per IU. In micrograms that is equivalent to 900 µg. The RDA for an adult is 22.4 IU of the natural version and 33.3 IU of the synthetic version, or about 15 mg and 30 mg.

Thank you!

(46,769 posts)And my oil from GNC is made from safflower -- which is specific to skincare. There is also a link on the internet to show the longevity of different oils. Safflower will last one year, so I assume the homemade hand sanitizer will as well.
Here is the article about the shelf life of oils:
