The company decided to close the office because of the coronavirus and everyone would work from home until things get better. Unfortunately, my job can't be done from home. It was a temp job but it was supposed to last awhile. They said that they would like me back when things get better. Hopefully I will have found something else by then. Thankfully, I have an emergency fund saved.
I will be fine. I'm over 30 but under 50. I'm strong, smart and healthy. I'm glad I have some money saved but I hope I don't have to use too much of it.
Thank you all for your kind words and advice. Reading your posts has made me feel better.

Some temp, some pt. Worth it to take a look if you really want to get right back in the work force.
Sorry you're going through this, it won't be an easy time for you. Unfortunately this is just the beginning.

(81,262 posts)Dont allow yourself to slip their minds! Just dont wanna overdo it. But your showing initiative like that, starts to make them regard you as more of a teammate than a temp. It will signal you actually care about the job/office/office mates/company. That will position you positively. YOURE the one who wanted to stay in touch. And why not, if they already told you theyd like you back, sounds like youre halfway home already.
Nevertheless, it cant be helped if you find something in the meantime, at least to help you get through the downtime. And it might also depend on what the stop-gap job is, and whether its no big deal if the first job comes back and you still wanted it so you bail on the stopgap.
GOOD LUCK, IrishEyes!!!!!

(3,321 posts)This is why everyone helping each other is such a good idea, and practice. Why should anyone be left out in the cold due to the mere vagaries of our economic system? They, and you, should not.
I know we can do better. I am anxious to get to that place, and time.

Really sorry to hear that, IrishEyes. Hopefully you'll find another job quickly, or get called back before that. Best of luck to you.

(51,590 posts)and hours cut in half in 1991 and have been close to being laid off too many times to count due to the economy. Being laid off sucks. That is why I always protested at union rallies when I became a teacher and yearly threats of lay offs happened throughout the 2000s. The wages and economy have pretty much sucked my whole life in the areas where I lived.

Years ago, I lost my high paying, high level corporate job, after 20 years. (Bank merger) I took a low paying job at local university which turned out to be a financial boon at retirement time! I hope hers works out for the better too!

(9,535 posts)During the govt. shutdown a federal fighter on our neighborhood Next Door let everyone know that he had a commercial coffee grinder and got bags of coffee beans from a friend. He was selling bags of freshly ground coffee online and many of us bought a few to help him out.
Others who were furloughed were offering their services to run errands, pull weeds, or whatever else they could think of.
You could always drive for Uber or Lyft if you are in an urban area, or one of those food delivery services.

I've had to do things like this in the past. Create your own job. Look for something that needs to be done and create your own job. At least it can help you out a bit until you are able to go back to what you were doing.
Wishing you lots of luck! Hang in there.

(28,793 posts)I have a contract position currently working from home, but I can imagine the possibility of this epidemic sinking the entire project. It will involve air travel as well, not a lot, but we'll just have to see how it goes. I'm glad you've planned well and hope you find another position quickly.

I'm not sure of what your work related skill sets are. Let your friends and family know that you're looking for safe and reliable employment. Reach out to networking and social media pages. Check out Indeed. com, SimplyHired.com and or Monster.com for your area.

(63,221 posts)I know how hard that can be. I have been in that position a few times before and I always thought it was the end of the world, but I always managed to survive somehow. I know that doesn't make it easier, but you will survive and things will get better. Just have faith that you were meant for better things. I wish you all the best!

(14,337 posts)who can telecommute from home. I am a retired Hourly Special Ed TA. If the schools were shut down, the Salaried Teachers would be paid, but the rest of the school staff would not; Aides, Cafeteria. Janitors. No work, no pay.
DIL works in Retail Cosmetics applying makeup on women. Her sister works in a Salon cutting hair. Both Hourly employees working with the general public. If stores and salons shut their doors, they will be out of work, and out of money.
So how will all these people pay their bills and put food on the table if everything in the US is shut down like Italy is doing?

(9,665 posts)celebrate your username plus the upcoming holiday and finally just to hopefully cheer you up. It sounds like you are a professional and whether your future brings more of that, work in the trades or something entirely different, I wish you luck.
The first tune is a gorgeous air played by the late Martin Fay called The Coombe. It's followed by an unknown march and finally a set dance (sounds like a hornpipe to me), known as The Job of Journeywork which is the name The Chieftains gave for the entire set. Of the three, I probably like the air the best. Not that Irish tune titles have much to do with the melody, journeywork probably refers to work as a tradesperson.
