So Bette Midler helped me start a little trend re: the USPS

Last edited Mon Apr 13, 2020, 12:33 AM - Edit history (1)

I follow her on Twitter because she's fabulous and she tweeted what a disgrace it was that Trump refused to help the USPS. So I sent her this:

"If just half of the adults in the US bought a sheet of 20 stamps it would raise about $1.5 Billion. There are some really cool ones right now - Woodstock, John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, the 50th anniversary of the 1st moon landing. #BUYSOMESTAMPS"

She retweeted it to her 1.9 MILLION followers and now it's been liked and retweeted over 2K times! People are ordering stamps and sharing which ones they chose. I know it won't SAVE the USPS. George W Bush and the GOP fucked it up in 2006 and it will take an act of Congress to fix it, but it's fun to generate some excitement for something we take for granted.

I pay retail and buy hundreds of dollars worth of stamps at a time. I do not use any services that offer better deals. I support my local post office in my little way.

Your idea is fantastic! And I am so grateful that your great call to action was shared to such a large audience. Thank you!

Semipostal Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service had available for sale in February 2020 the following 65-cent fundraising or “semipostal” stamps: the congressionally mandated Breast Cancer Research stamp and Save Vanishing Species stamp as well as the U.S. Postal Service’s discretionary Healing PTSD stamp. These stamps were available for purchase at Post Offices™, online at The Postal Store®, and by toll-free phone order at 1-800-782-6724.

The price of a semipostal stamp pays for the First-Class single-piece postage rate in effect at the time of purchase plus an amount to fund causes that have been determined to be in the national public interest. By law, revenue from sales (minus postage and the reasonable reimbursement of costs to the Postal Service™) is to be transferred to a selected executive agency or agencies.

Look what they've raised for Breast Cancer Research, and this is what the GOP wants to shut down, Can you see a private for profit company doing this? I don't think so.

Breast Cancer Research Stamp
The Breast Cancer Research semipostal was issued July 29, 1998, in Washington, DC. As of the end of February 2020, more than 1.06 billion Breast Cancer Research stamps had been sold, bringing the total revenue raised to more than $90.9 million. By law, 70 percent of the net amount raised is transferred to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent is transferred to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. Stamp artist Whitney Sherman of Baltimore, MD, worked under the direction of art director Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, MD, to create this stamp design.

Breast Cancer Research stamp sales information through February 2020:

Total stamps sold: 1.06 billion
Total raised: $90.9 million
