Are they proud?
Are they embarrassed?
Did they gain any awareness of how ugly hatred is?
I know I'll likely never know, but it is something I wonder about.
Back in college, a girl on my dorm hall was photographed mocking a homeless person. When she saw the photo, she was startled and shocked out of her sense of smug superiority and self-righteousness. She was embarrassed, but I have to give it to her, she actually found him, apologized, and invited him to have lunch with her. I have no idea where she ended up or what she's doing these days, but things like this always remind me of her.
What did these people see in the unexpected mirror?
