(66,090 posts)And it isn't the high note that does it; it is the moment leading up to it. That moment when you realize that the tenor has committed, and he's going to go for it, rather than modulate or pace his voice.
Those last few steps up, with that glorious high note just ahead, always wrench the tears out of me...

(34,058 posts)and when he died they had a very nice musical memorial that I and my family participated in. The most moving was one of his friends singing this. I can almost not listen to it, it always did bring me to tears but now it is hard to avoid more that that even 18 years later.

(2,012 posts)One of my favorites so I have it turned up so the neighbors can hear Nessun Dorma. So fortunate to have CPR Classical 24 hours a day all round Colorado; such a comfort in these hard times. Yesterday at 5:00 pm they played Beethoven's Ode To Joy on all stations and asked us all to go outside or open windows and listen to honor all the medical care workers in Colorado who have risked their lives to give care and save lives during this awful pandemic.
Of course it was Beethoven's 250th, Earth Day's 50th, Shakespeare's 456th too. Trying to remember all the people we need to honor.
This/MY PBS station's on 24/7, and I have it on until bedtime!

(16,887 posts)a few years ago and the lead tenor had been out in the "weather" and contracted something. The producer/director came out before the performance and gave him great credit for being "recovered" and the show would go on.
He actually did a very strong job - until Nessun Dorma. Leading up to it I was convinced it would all be OK.
The gasp from the audience was louder than the "High B" at the end.
Too bad - what a let-down.
A beautiful production however, and the show is certainly more than 1 note.........
