(5,477 posts)I *really* miss going to the Aquarium every week for my volunteer shift. I love feeding and interacting with our Giant Pacific Octopus, and look forward to the day when the Aquarium can open again and get the volunteers back on the floor. I really like doing the 'enrichment' feedings, where we put the food into, for instance, a tube or a Fisher Price tugboat and let them figure out how to get it. Once they've done it one time, they can do it faster as they repeat the task.
Even when I was diving, the wild octopuses would come over to check you out. They didn't like the feel of the neoprene gloves, but if you took your glove off they'd reach out and you could feel the suckers at the tip of their arms gripping and releasing as they tasted the back of the hand (they have taste receptors in the suckers). They'd look at this strange creature with all the shiny stuff and bubbles, and gently touch to explore something soft and warm - like nothing else in their environment.
Amazing creatures.
