5. My understanding:

At some point, people came up with a couple of "clever" (opinions vary) responses to questions that had obvious answers, namely, "Does a bear shit in the woods?" and "Is the Pope Catholic?".

At some later point, people "cleverly " (same caveat), reversed the sayings, so, "Is a bear Catholic?" and "Does the Pope shit in the woods?".

The caption draws on two of those saws.
