For those of you who love to listen to audiobooks, audible.com is a great source. They have recently added a large number of books for free for members. I love the cozy mystery genre and was able to pick up the first 13 books of a 16 book series and all 6 books in another series. I am taking the time to peruse what is available and grabbing what I can. They also have various types of sales off and on.

(8,028 posts)My local library has an impressive collection and books can be downloaded for free. Sometimes Im number 67 on a waiting list for one copy of a popular new release, but I can always be listening to something else.

(8,028 posts)A great tip, however, for anyone else. I have also recommended books that have gotten added to the collection, and get notified when they become available to check out or put on hold.

(17,863 posts)I get many audiobooks from there. I probably listen to 15-20 hrs/week when I walk/jog/row/step. The new Plus program does have a lot of books that don't require a credit to basically "borrow".
Other sources for audiobooks include Amazon Prime and Kindle Unlimited. The Unlimited selection (which is also an ebook service) is pretty good as well.
Check your local library for Hoopla and Overdrive. Hoopla is particularly nice since the audiobooks are available immediately. You have to wait for the Overdrive book to be checked back in.
I am currently making my way through the Stoker Award (Horror) winners and nominees for all years in the novel category (158 total). I have 99 completed of 158 (including several earlier books if the nominee are award winner is part of a series). I also got all the audiobooks available in a top 100 horror list.

(34,108 posts)my state library and Hoopla I never go without a book. When I am waiting for one or two to become available that is when I will use a credit on Audible or on a book I just really want to have. We are so lucky to have all that. Books were getting pricey!

(34,108 posts)I just got The Year of Magical Thinking for free. It is narrated by Vanessa Redgrave who I saw do it in her one woman show on Broadway. Free FREE! It is so moving. Also comedies. I loved Harvey Fierstein doing Bella Abzug in Bella Bella from last months group of free listening. Dan Rather too. So many to choose from.

(12,153 posts)I haven't played any audio books for years, not since moving out of mountain lion country. To take my puppies out to pee in the backyard, I used to put on my husband's parka (summer and winter) to look big, carry a tiki torch, and play an audio book narrated by a deep-voiced man.
Now I'm going to start *listening* to audio books. Thanks!
