There's a BIG windstorm going on in SW Montana, started last night, expected to last through tomorrow. This is a constant 40mph wind with gusts up to a good 80mph. One of our huge, 85-90ft tall, fir trees just broke in half and the top half is suspended in the trees along the back of the house, right over the back quarter of the house, the landlord's living room and bedroom! We aren't sure what to do about 45ft of doubled trunk fir tree that may or may not fall on the house, still from twenty feet above it. Very precarious and some serious damage if it does come down on it's own. There was a loud bang when one of the branches of the trees holding it up broke and fell on the roof.
Of all the damned trashy trees on and next to the property, it's the beautiful and sturdy fir tree that snapped. Could be a scary night down at the other end of the house. My apartment is clear of the trees but if that part of the house is damaged, could be rough going at my end since everything is sort of connected.
Pretty unnerving.

(10,872 posts)But there is fresh snow on the ground in Spokane because of this storm. Sounds like it continued on into MT as well. Stay safe and warm my friends. Keep your generators at the ready...

(8,955 posts)this morning but the tree got worst of it. 75 foot, 20 inch Shasta red fir snag, 70 feet downhill from the front porch. Broke off clean at its base or it would not have reached the house. Some damage limited to the gutter. Wind out of the north. Friday the 13th.

(9,664 posts)There were big winds here last night and today too. Forecast calls for lots of rain/snow (1-3 feet) in the hills north of us and probably heading your way if not there already.

(86,597 posts)they had a lodgepole pine come down next to their place but missed the house. Lodgepoles come down easily as the roots are not deep into the ground. they know an arborist who came and gave us some advice and the phone number of a professional service with a crane.
Our tree will need a crane to come and deal with this. There are three ash trees holding the bulk of it up, the broken end is loosely resting on the bottom section of the trunk. We still have a good 24 hrs yet of wind.
Not much we can do until something else happens which includes the passage of time.
