Pet reactions to holiday celebrations

When I was a teen we had a dog who hid in the garage when July 4th firecrackers went off. But he loved Christmas, knew which pile of gifts was his, and tore into them as the rest of us opened our presents.

Last night, on New Year's Eve, my fearless feline defended the home front from a sky monster.

Somebody several blocks away set off a series of fireworks at midnight. Kitty sat up straight in full alert mode when the ratta tat tat sounds penetrated into my upper floor apartment. I went to a window to watch. Kitty followed, jumped onto the sill next to where I stood and stared at the color shooting into the sky. She stood on all fours, head and neck stretched forward, ears perked up, eyes glaring. I heard a low rumbling sound and saw her chest vibrate. It was not a sweet, contented kitty purr. She was growling a warning to the sky monster not to get any closer.

And it worked. After another minute, the color bursts and noise stopped. Mission accomplished. She jumped off the sill and strutted across the room, but her ears stayed perked up a little longer in case she was needed again.

I slept well, knowing I was protected by a brave guard cat.

When my Poops was a baby, many years ago, I kept hearing a strange noise unlike anything I had ever heard. It sounded... weird. Like, kind of mechanical, kind of gurgle-y, combined with the sound of a person extending the letter “V.” Weird. Of course, my boyfriend was never in the room when the noise happened. A couple weeks later, he finally heard it.

It took us about a month to realize it was tiny kitten Pooper growling at squirrels and people walking by our ground floor apartment.
We’ve had many cats and I’ve never heard one make a sound like that.

She eventually grew out of it and I still miss it.

with the sky monster. The first one was on July 4th when somebody set off fireworks in an empty lot across the street from me. They lasted longer and were louder because they were closer. Kitty had the same reaction, but growled a little more fiercely the whole time.

No doubt when she recognized similar sounds last night, she knew the same monster had returned and it called for another serious warning to scare it off. After all, it had worked once before.

that both trucks and fireworks make. Some cats react more to sounds than others. Mine is very alert to every sound, but since I live on a busy intersection of a city, she is used to the sounds of trucks, cars, and ambulances and firetrucks. Even my vacuum cleaner no longer bothers her. She perches on a high spot to watch it go by, but no longer hisses or swats at it.

It's strange sounds that put her in alert mode. Fireworks both sound and look ominous to her.

around the corner of a piece of furniture and take swipes at the vacuum cleaner when it rolled past her.

One day in the bathroom, she swatted my hair dryer just as I was turning it off. She must have felt empowered by that, as if she had caused it to go off. Soon afterward, I brought out the vacuum and she boldly strolled up to it and walloped it. She was just a year old then.

Now she's 5 years old and sprawls on the back of the couch or perches on a bookcase and calmly watches it go by.

being vacuumed! Would make it soo much easier to deal with shedding. She's short-haired, but has a soft, fluffy undercoat.

She hates being brushed or combed and has hated it since she was a tiny kitten. I read once that some cats have a genetic hypersensitivity to their skin beneath the fur being touched during grooming. So I tried using a toothbrush and she loves that. Not as efficient as a regular grooming brush or comb, but it gets loose hairs, makes her coat shiny and soft, and creates bonding moments.
