(39,539 posts)And what relationship was he to the director
Robert Altman received $75,000 for directing the film, the lyricist received about $2,000,000 due to royalties received because the song was used in the television series as well as for the movie.

(32,388 posts)(What a gip!)
here's one for you, who wrote the music?
Brother Buzz
(39,539 posts)as co-writers on the credits, so Michael Altman wrote half of it. I don't know the composer's name, but I know he was a respected professional in the trade.
$75K was some serious jingle in 1969; I believe it was more than what a typical CEO was making.

(39,539 posts)Pretty heady and poignant shit for a fifteen-year-old kid to lay to paper
Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
That game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The sword of time will pierce our skin
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it grin
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
"Is it to be or not to be?"
And I replied, "Oh, why ask me?"
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I...
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

(32,388 posts)and not true (Sticking a gun in your mouth & pulling the trigger is "painless"?)
(btw, I've never before seen those other lyrics)
Brother Buzz
(39,539 posts)The opening credits had the full 'Wrecking Crew' polished rendition (which is what we heard on the radio), while the fake funeral scene was simpler, with just a guitar and solo singer.
I'm not even sure if we heard any lyrics in the TV series, but Robert Altman's son was credited as co-writer so he made out like a bandit.
