I felt that the nail on my left big toe was too thick, so I went after it with cutting pliers and tweezers. It's gone.

(190 posts)Always been my worst fear. Losing a nail entirely, oh my goodness. Does it hurt pretty bad?

(5,351 posts)There was some pain involved with removal, but honestly not much. When you get over the weird sensation of feeling some tissue tearing it actually hurts more to pinch yourself.

(5,351 posts)I just know that my nail was beginning to be a bother within my shoe. It wasn't a case of fungus, I don't think... just old age. It had to come off. Did it myself. I'm pleased. Will not allow it to become infected. Thanks!

(7,947 posts)The nail just dissolved. I was really worried, but the doctor said keep it bandaged, and put ointment on to keep the nailbed soft. It took about 4 months, but it grew back, and I never had any problems.

(66,516 posts)Neither thicker nor skinnier. Pretty much the same.
I do excisions of ingrown toenails all the time. I did three just last week. The nail grows back normally, and, after counseling the patient against practices that increase risk of ingrowth, without complication.

Dont ask me how I know this.

(24,381 posts)Because Ive done it to each big toe in the past!
Once by hitting the left one with a sledge hammer right on the tip and the other by running it over with a large piece of wheeled equipment! Both fell off (or I yanked it off) within a week or two.
The right one grew back and started to curl and become ingrown, so I had it removed and the cuticle cauterized, so I have a right big toe that has no lid now!
The left one is happy as a big toenail.

(9,227 posts)It wasnt heavy, but it fell about five feet and the end of the handle landed squarely on the nail. Thank God it was on the magnetic strip with the tines pointing up!

(22,852 posts)Anbesol or any Benzocaine product to numb the area before you do your surgery. If you are having pain now, it may also help relieve it. It might burn at first though, as it sounds like you have some exposed raw areas.

(22,852 posts)Many people struggle with unrelenting rough feet and toe fungus without knowing that you can use vaporub* as a home remedy. The rough skin is often a symptom of chronic foot fungus.
Liberally apply the vaporub, wrap your feet in plastic wrap, put them in socks and wear this overnight. Once you remove the wrap use warm water and you favorite scrubbing tool, loofah, shower puff or pedicure brush to exfoliate.
Repeat the process until the fungus subsides. It works like a charm. One of the best home remedies I have ever used.

*any similar ointment with camphor, menthol, spirits of turpentine, oil of eucalyptus, cedarwood, nutmeg, and thymol will work.

(10,281 posts)My sister hiked the pacific crest trail a few years ago. Its a big goal for some to hike the entire trail in one season. To this end some have their toe nails removed by a doctor, at least she'd been told that by some people shed met on the trail. I'm not sure how that's supposed to help but I do believe its true.
