(90,795 posts)Consumers are often influenced by what their favorite celebrity is wearing. Trends often start that way.
Colors, hem lines/dress lengths, suit cuts etc., primarily start with the fashion houses and trickle out from there.
Fashion Houses are also aware of trends and those trends often shape their line. They look at trends in music, literature, entertainment - even political thought.
The edge is getting your line out first, making it stand out, and one that best reflects style trends that are still early enough in their infancy.
Music that is bold and edgy will inspire fashion trends that are bold and edgy.
Music that takes you back to an earlier sound will bring about fashion trends that do the same.
Culturally, it is all tied together. Music/Books/Ideas/Fashion - all a reflection of the times you're living in and what is happening around you.
You can actually tell a lot about what is happening in how people think by what is trending in the fashion world at that place in time.
More conservative, less conservative, more liberal, less liberal, more sedate, bold, muted colors, bold colors - all tied to how people think about life.
Is the future bright or do you have to be cautious? Fashion can and does reflect that. As will music and literature.
Speaking for myself - I wear what I want to wear regardless of what is "in". Read what I want and listen to the music I want.

(90,795 posts)I don't like the baggy pants style of baggy pants - fitted at the waist and billowy through the legs. Like from the 80's.
I'm sure your joke was funny.

(113,125 posts)Even when I was young and admit to wearing the tight French jeans I still preferred the baggier look.

(102,477 posts)the past decades, when I absolutely would not even try, skinny jeans is not one of them. I don't think they look good on ANYONE, male or female, size 2 supermodel or anyone else. And I thought they looked worse on men--rendering them with "chicken legs." Not to mention how bizarrely they walk as though they were wearing a hobble, unable to even flex their ankle, much less their legs. At least leggings allow one to move. Your mileage may vary, but ultra skinny jeans out of fashion? Thank the Goddess.

(27,848 posts)Like the look, like how comfortable it is. It cycles back around for those reasons. Baggy pant looks usually don't last long.

(11,519 posts)the trend comes and goes but its still sloppy looking and a waste of fabric.

(26,314 posts)Skinny jeans make no sense to me, but then I'm pretty apathetic about current fashions.
Admittedly, I found my fashion niche, back in my teens. I dress warm in the Winter (comfy jeans or leggings, and big sweaters), and from Spring to late Fall I am almost always dressed in full blown 'Boho' cotton/gauze skirts and tops, even when I'm gardening. Exception is my wonderful cargo slacks, for when I'm mowing. I actually found them in the woods. After the third time I walked past them, I figured they were abandoned, so I took them. I think they came from a military surplus store. They are not my size, but that's what belts are for. I can carry my keys and cell phone, with room to spare.

(31,538 posts)I don't pay too much attention to what's in or out of style at the time. Classics are always in style and spandex is your friend.
I've never been a fan of skinny jeans. I just don't like the look. I do wear leggings as long as my top is long enough to cover my backside.
I don't care for really wide legs either. When I was younger, I could really rock a pair of bell bottoms, but that was a few decades ago.

(42,657 posts)Culottes, aka How To Make Even Tall Thin Young Lovelies Look Dumpy. Thats a look that needs to be left back in the 70s.

(55,027 posts)to me the are longer baggy shorts that look like a skirt. that picture is what I call flood pants or capris, however I agree with the description of how they make the wearer look. I can't stand capri pants.
tanyev
(42,657 posts)Im not a fan of capris either, but a thinner leg that ends below the knee still looks better to me than the full culotte legs ending at the same length. For some reason a skirt that length with boots works, but culottes do not. And Im sure I had a pair in their 70s heyday. That would have been my high school/college years. Im tall, was quite thin at the time, but I think I wore them one or two times and then stuck them at the back of my closet.

(47,583 posts)Im gonna throw on a pair of boot cut jeans and a heavy black tee-shirt and let the new kids dress in the new style just like I have for the last 40 years.

(16,391 posts)I'm not an obese person and still the skinny jeans are so unflattering I refuse to wear them. I also think I'm the only woman at work who doesn't wear leggings. I bought some, but every time I put them on I feel like I'm in one of those dreams where you forget to wear your pants to work, so I've never made it out of the house with leggings and a tunic. Can't do it.
