Dh and I sat down together and did our taxes this evening. Wasnt horrible- yes, we owe but not unreasonably vast sums of money.
I worked with my oldest on getting his taxes done tonight. We finished around midnight his time. Maybe next year hell want to do his own. Works for me!
Youngest will call me in the morning so we can do his. Im hoping he has his university tax form or can otherwise find it using his phone (hes off climbing this month), otherwise Ill have to file for an extension and guess at his taxes due. Hes just graduated from undergrad so this will be one of the last times I do his taxes with him (he was still a dependent last year but should earn enough this year to file his own next year as *not* a dependent.)
Whew. Im just tired. I always wait until the last minute but this year we had some different inputs on our taxes that had me nervous. Not so nervous to sit down and do them until today, but still. Big relief.

(15,806 posts)But Ive been doing it while they are in college because they incurred some tax burden via their full rides. So Ive always covered that for them. I make them sit through every step (pretty uncomplicated actually).
Youngest will have some tax burden next year from the last of his scholarship this year. Once thats cleared, hell be doing his own.
Its just the arrangement weve made- and they get to take it on for themselves once theyre fully out of undergrad and the tax year doesnt have their scholarship.

(25,853 posts)As someone with grown sons, I do understand the issue of helping out versus making them independent. And thank you for your response. I've been in the position of helping my sons out, while knowing the were going to need to be on their own in the near future. It's not easy, we both know.

(8,042 posts)I know what a relief it is. I had mine done a couple of months ago. It's so out of my wheelhouse that I have no desire at all to do my own.
I knew I was going to owe but thank God because of President Biden's American Rescue Plan it was about 1/2 of what it would've been.

(15,806 posts)Congrats on the lower tax burden!
Every year I think Ill tackle it sooner than I actually do. But I have my tax forms all organized so its really quite fast once I sit down.

(7,627 posts)We just pay HR block to do it for us. We show up at the appointment with all the papers and they do it, asking us questions as they go. The same lady has been doing them for us for the past decade. The cost is $200 or so but we like that we dont have to waste 3 hours or wonder if we did it correctly with the everchanging tax code.

(3,573 posts)Well maybe not.
I help my developmentally delayed daughter do hers by phone from Germany. She uses the free IRS service through HR Block. Previously I have used their software. I did taxes by hand before and for the first 2 years of using software to file. Just to see if there were differences.
I even took the classes to get certified to do taxes for other people. I was thinking of using that as a part time gig during retirement. Now I pay a professional to handle my taxes in Germany.
If you are lower income you can do you taxes free through the IRS. Don't know the upper income limit. That has worked well for my daughter for 6 years now.

(10,185 posts)When I was working I always did them early because Id always get a refund. The first couple years after I retired I e had to pay due to taking money out of my 401. Long story there, but Im getting a refund this years the first time in awhile. Did my federal taxes last night. I was so distracted I lost my phone. Was up half the night looking for it. I knew it had to be in my apartment. I managed to get ahold of my son and have him call me. I always leave the ringer off but fortunately I could hear the vibration down inside my armchair. It was way down in it, Id already searched it a couple times but being right there when the call came in I could hear it. So last night was pretty stressful even though I finally got the taxes done. Finished state taxes tonite. What a relief!

(182,788 posts)There was a withholding screw up when I changed jobs last year and neither of us caught it. Big payment but then we had the money because we didnt pay it during the year. State was a small amount.
