Charles Thomson hero-worships George Washington. The little drum-roll that plays every time Thomson speaks the General’s name. The way Thomson confesses he thinks Washington is writing to him.

It’s movingly human…

that Dick Nixon asked his old friend Jack Warner to clip this scene from the original release because he found it so offensive. They put it back when they released the Director's Cut.
