Mermaid movies -- an international vision.

Accidentally walked into these two. I had seen Netflix's Tidelands, which is an Australian series about a mermaid colony and it was passable, so I was open to the genre. I just subscribed to Prime Video for the first time to see Tomorrow War with Chris Pratt. That movie alone was well worth one month of payment, though I think the first 30 days is free So, obviously, I want to run through all the free offerings in the first two months.

So, I stumbled upon the "Mermaid Down" movie first. The story plot begins with a gruesome act of violence. A fisherman hatches a plot to capture a Mermaid and severe it from its tail. I had to read summary reviews before I waded into that movie. It was pitched as a reflection of the cruelty in the fishing industry as well as a female bonding movie. I think I can agree with both descriptions. It's a fantasy/horror movie. The design for the tail was definitely something different than I've seen in the other movies. No shiny glitter scales on this Mermaid.

Based on the reviews that I read for Mermaid Down, I came up with two other Mermaid movies. "Lure" and "Blue My Mind." I couldn't find a free version of "Lure" so I didn't get to see it, but I did find "Blue My Mind" on the free streaming channel, Tubi.

I got to tell you, I saw a lot here that looked like exploitation, but it's made in Switzerland so you're dealing with a non-USA scale of purity. It's pitched as an ultimate coming of age, where a young girl is dealing with the same issues that young girls deal with as puberty hits, but in a very different way. Again, the tail was not Disney-influenced. More dark and slithering. But, the story remained true to the theme: a coming of age movie. It's with English captions.

2. I wouldn't consider any of the international movies family oriented.

the originals tend to be much darker and more of what we would call "adult" fare, though not in a pornographic sense (since that is seemingly back in the news). I spent a while as an amateur story teller, it was intersting.

I read an Irish mermaid story where the fisherman trapped the siren and forced her to have his children and raise them. He somehow, trapped them all in his house while he was gone for work. Of course, she grew legs on land and took care of the kids. Then, one day, she found a way to escape and took the children to the beach. He caught up with them in time to watch her drown his children and swim away.

It's a dream-nightmare scene that occurs as two men go insane.

The mermaid is as much sea creature as woman, with a very obvious vagina. It screams like the sirens of legend. It's scary as hell. The whole movie was scary, in an excellent sort of way.

This latest one, Tenet, took a lot of personal research before I would even take a chance to watch it. The initial reviews I read were not promising because the main concept of time manipulation, but oh, not time travel, was a bit challenging to grasp. So I went in fully understanding the movie BEFORE I saw it.

And, now that the scientific concept is grasped, it looks like they're going to take it into a sequel.
