Tarantula hawk wasp stung me yesterday - it took vengeance for my supporting Lounge tarantula killer

I encroached on this type wasp's territory of killing tarantulas. A month or two ago I posted about seeing a few of these in the yard, this year unlike before. I only knew of them from a childhood viewing of a Disney nature film. But in my puttering around these menacing looking things weren't aggressive, were fairly close by but just going about their business, and I only saw one at a time such that silly me thought it was the only one. Yes, when one was in the porch I Raid-ed it. Maybe another one - maybe TWO.

But yesterday I was dragging out something from a shed, and suddenly a *MOB* of a dozen swarmed out and one of them *HIT* me on the hand in a kamikaze attack. I hadn't been stung since being a kid and ever since I imagined such a thing as being like a prolonged, latching-on event. Well, this was the briefest of a HIT and run and left the tiniest puncture, like not even enough for a drop of blood. Still there was immediate but slight swelling and then itching.

Google said scary things about (regular?) wasp stings - some condition that can be lethal (if allergic?). Also said baking soda or apple cider vinegar can counter the *POISON*. But that the lethal type takes effect in 5 minutes or an hour. So by that time it was over an hour later and I wasn't dead. But the swelling was bigger but not humongous, felt TIGHT like balloon swelling inside and with irritating itching.

Just a couple of days ago I was supporting a Loungeteer about killing a tarantula, so sometimes karma is FAST. Ran out of Raid so just stocked up.

1. That is among one of the worst stings, so I've heard.

I've seen them in my yard a few times. I got stung in the nose by a red wasp a while back. It came out of nowhere and got its stinger up in my nose. I felt that in my sinuses for weeks. I have quite a few velvet ants in my yard (they are a wingless wasp). Though I haven't been stung by one, they are very nasty from what I've heard. Then there are the scorpions I find in my house, but they are usually doing the wiggly death dance from the spray I have Orkin lay down for me- I'm not messing with scorpions in the house.

snake that I at first mistook for a prairie rattler, but on closer observation, it was a harmless (and useful) bullsnake--most often mistaken for rattlesnakes in my area. It was in my garden so the hoe was right there, but fortunately, I hesitated long enough to see its head clearly, which was NOT triangular and thus a bullsnake, not a rattlesnake. Live and let live. These guys are not aggressive and actually can kill the venomous snakes. So, I let it hang out a few hours before I saw it head for the neighbors who I knew to be waiting to capture it for release into the wetland area nearby.

I relocate all non-venomous spiders, but will occasionally let a wolf spider remain in the basement because they eat the nasty ones. And as I mentioned, tarantulas are not a thing in my area, but I know full well they are not venomous nor particularly aggressive, so I'd likewise relocate them to "live and let live."

Maybe they communicate among themselves...LOL. But I'm not taking any chances!

Wasps and scorpions are not among those I relocate, however, nor black widow spiders or the brown recluse. But for those that don't hurt me, I'll go the extra mile.

Seriously, That's supposed to be one of the most painful stings there is.

That's no kind of fun.

Those things scare me.

Last year, I took over a dozen yellow jacket stings and a couple of wasp stings to the face. My eyes swelled up like baseballs. This was near the beginning of the pandemic, so I didn't want to go to the doctor. I waited it out until I felt better.

A few days ago, there were a few wasps flying around in my office. I got them to fly out the window, but then I started noticing dead yellow jackets in the rooms adjacent to the office. One dead in the toilet, one on the stairs, etc.

I went outside and watched the house. They were getting in my shuttle attic under a piece of vinyl siding corner post. I emptied 2 full cans of spray into the opening, but it did not touch them. I had to call an exterminator, who put on a bee suit and crawled through blown in insulation in an attic that was probably 120 degrees. I was behind him, holding a flashlight. He found the nest, and while he could not remove it, he used all different kinds of sprays and strips, both inside and outside the house, to get them. I think he was successful (fingers crossed). I believe there were well over 1,000 of them.

most of the stings were from yellow jackets. They do not leave a stinger, but they do sting you repeatedly. Underground nest, and they were pissed.

Black flies yesterday.

They came at me several and the bites hurt.

I was slapping all over my body as they were swooping in one after another biting me.

Today I have welts on my arms. Yesterday by time I got home they were looking like they might be infected, angry red, hot, swelling and oozing clear yellow liquid and omg they itched. Ended up scratching out the "poison" and the itches subsided, washed up with soap and water and put peroxide on each bite than Neosporin and bandaids. They look better today but still itch. Mind you these were flies black flies.

They ambushed me.
Never got bit walking around there before.

Are insects just becoming nastier?

The ONE did a hit and run. I don't know if these die when they sting, but it didn't hang around. The rest of them flew out confusedly in all other directions, not organized like a Roman legion, like, anywhere-but-HERE crazily away from the shed. A minute later when I poked somewhere with a hoe, a couple of them started to defend but were overcome by Raid and perched to lick their limbs.
