I enjoy creating rhythms on my Djembe. It is a great stress reliever and meditative.
The flute comes out every December. I read music, yet the Christmas songs are melodies I know, so I am more successful playing.

(70,237 posts)not very hard, tho.
been taking voice lessons for about a year now. if i practiced the piano as often as i used my voice, i might not be hopeless.
need to do it, tho. if i cant play when i sing, i cant keep on key. i'm not bad, but i'd be a lot better of i worked at it at.all.
have a great guitar, too. mostly i just caress and thump it.
def a thing i'm planning to do in my old age.

(131,136 posts)so Dad and brother Billy had our baby grand all to themselves; Billy now has it @ his house in Iowa.
Participated in high school choral groups, and still sing those songs.

(54,770 posts)and Bouzouki, and a few others. Keyboards can be nice for people who want to get into music.
Dont play most of my instruments well, but I can fool people for 10 seconds. So, I play for enjoyment. Occasionally, record something to learn from. Often play while sorta watching TV.
Djembes are really cool. One can get so many sounds out of it. I need to get a new head. Its on my list.
Flute is cool. I keep looking at Irish whistles or Native American flutes.
Play on.

(7,396 posts)We also brought the drummer from Saturday Night Live, Valerie Naranjo, to our town for a concert by her, and then a workshop the next day. It was so great!
She plays many percussion instruments. The Gyil is an African indigenous instrument she has mastered.

(11,927 posts)Oh, I also am teaching myself the Kalimba. The whole family does duet, trio, and quartets at times, and all 4 of us play handbells.

(35,745 posts)but I had an extensive musical education as a kid. I started learning piano when I was barely five years old. I learned a multi-keyboard and foot pedal church organ and was a church organist by the time I was 11. I also played the carillons, which are church bells.
While in school I learned bassoon and sax.
I tried drums but was terrible at at it.

(25,902 posts)good, but I did okay.
Some decades later I took piano lessons, along with my two young sons. It was a wonderful experience. I have almost no ability to assess that time, but I will say it was very enlightening and interesting.
While taking piano lessons is not for everyone, I'm glad for my experience with them.

(12,160 posts)then on to clarinet, and as an adult I play, or used to before my hands got too shaky, Celtic harp, mountain dulcimer, hammer dulcimer, violin, and cello. For hammer dulcimer, I tape the hammers to my hands to keep the hammers from flying away, but oh, well, it works. I can still play my Irish whistles with no problem, and I especially love my low D whistle.

(54,445 posts)My main instrument is the 12 string guitar. The ultimate master is Leo Kottke, though I will never attain his level:
Leo is no slouch on the 6 string, either:
But on the 12 string, he is the master:
As for me, along with guitars, I also play bass, keyboards, Balalaika and a few sizes of the Balkan Tambouritsa family.

I've also dabbled in a few stringed instruments, but never got beyond learning to play a few scales.

(36,469 posts)Not very well, but if I can whistle a tune I can knock it out on a saw.
Note: I play a vintage conventional saw with a violin bow so I'm very limited in my range. Snagging a genuine musical saw and a cello bow is on my bucket list.

(24,053 posts)I only play my piano (a Gulbransen 1918 upright grand player piano) and flute when I am home by myself, so no one can hear my mistakes.
When I play my flute, my female tuxie cat shows up, meowing loudly. I can't tell if she is trying to sing along or squawking at me to stop. She does the same thing when I sing.
I used to know enough chords on the guitar to play a few folk songs.
