Johnny Depp in an "art film", The Libertine, where he flexes his skill to the limit.
Depp plays John Wilmot, the Second Earl of Rochester. In this scene, he offers to train aspiring actress Elizabeth Barry (a real historic person, considered to be one of England's first great actresses.) Barry is not as receptive as expected.
Historically, women were not allowed on stage until Charles 2 restoration. It is likely that Wilmot persuaded Charles to allow this. Until then, womens parts had been played by men.
Pretty progressive for a guy considered one of the major poets, but even today his poetry is not widely published as it is considered "obscene". Wilmot's mother, a Puritan, burned large parts of his work upon his death, now lost forever.
Fittingly, many of the actors/actresses in this film were students.
This is powerful.
Lizzy Barry as an early empowered woman.

(19,640 posts)Not a dull moment.
A lot of it was actually filmed at Wilmot's estate.

Tell me no more of constancy,
The frivolous pretense
Of cold age, narrow jealousy,
Disease, and want of sense.
Let duller fools, on whom kind chance
Some easy heart has thrown,
Despairing higher to advance,
Be kind to one alone
