Is there really a market for old computer equipment?

I have some old printers and modems and a CRT, but donation places like Goodwill aren't interested if things are over 5 years old. And although there's a local place that specializes in recycling of computers equipment, I keep reading articles on "what do with old computer equipment" that always suggest trying to sell these items, as there's apparently a market for parts or whatever.

We're talking Laserjet 5L, Lexmark X2250, big bulky monitor...

Anyone had any luck with selling things like this?

Laptops i usually give away to kids after wiping the hard drive.

The problem with selling is that the shipping is a pain and expensive.

my ex left me w a ton of stuff. all over 5 yrs now, but some seem timeless- cases, power supplies, fans. and some must still be good for something. there's a bunch of memory form i hi powered mainframe. should be able to run something.
i keep thinking i need to see if the local school robotics team is interested. they have an award winning team.

Laptop fans wear out before anything else, so it saves them to set them on a fan.

Gets it out of the garage faster, too, without hassling around on ebay for, like, $5 here and $7 there.

6. I recently bought a 14-year-old computer.

On EBay, a few months ago. I wanted to do a few things using Adobe InDesign, and I also wanted to have the option of using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Acrobat, although I ended up not needing to use those. I had used those software programs extensively on my newspaper job, from which I retired in 2014. After I retired I went to the computer store to buy the latest version of the Adobe Creative Suite (which includes all of those applications) to replace a much earlier version of the Adobe Creative Suite that I had purchased in February 2005, since I was not going to have access to those applications any more at work. That was when I found out you can't buy that any more. Instead you have to buy a key or link and get online and pay a subscription fee to turn it on for 12 months. I think that costs several hundred dollars. I hit the ceiling when I found out about that! Think about what they're now making you do to use their software. They're trying to force you to have to pay them money FOREVER!

Well, I absolutely will not do that. For one thing, I might use that software only once or twice a year, or perhaps not even that often. For another, just on principle I will not allow them to be sucking money out of me FOREVER, even if I'll want to use the software often. So I decided, I will just use the Adobe Creative Suite software I purchased in February 2005, and I still have the installation disks for that older version. The problem is, that software will not run on my current computers. It's just too old, and there are software compatibility issues.

So, I needed an older computer that will run that old software. I still have my old laptop from back then, but when I tried to boot it up I discovered that it won't run any more. It had been sitting there in that closet untouched since about 2010 and when I tried to boot it up it just displayed a bunch of indecipherable computer language and an error message.

So I went online and found an old computer on EBay that would run that software. Now I've got that old Mac laptop, it works great, and I have my Adobe Creative Suite software installed on it and that works great too. And I'm not having to pay several hundred dollars per year to those greedy corporate capitalists to use it. They're not going to be able to suck money out of me forever.

I wanted to use it to make some bumper stickers for my car and I have to save them as .pdf files, save them on thumb drives and put the thumb drives in the new computer.

Anyway, the bottom line is, you can find uses for old computer equipment. I've got some still older software that I would love to be able to still use, but I would have to have even older computers for that.

I had that same problem but this is one approach a person could take.

You are absolutely right about paying them forever. Not gonna' happen, from here anyway.

I pretty much get by with paint.net but if I ever wanted to do Photoshop....

mouses, keyboards and cables. We never know when we might need one and Radio Shack is outta
business now! And yeah, I've mothballed my old desktop running XP but use my Win 7 as my main
machine but use a laptop running Vista and another desktop running WIN 10 for backup. So far so
good.

Alas, I've only got old printers.

Well... and a Windows PC that suffered the "blue screen of death." I keep hoping that someday in the future I'll manage to get that hard drive to some experts to try to retrieve family photos off of it.

Version 6 would be a lot more recent. Not sure how recent of a computer they will work on. I have thought of trying to find the most recent version on EBay from before they stopped selling installation disks, but what I have now works well enough, especially considering how little I will use that software anyway. Thanks for the offer, though.

I'm kinda liking the suggestions to simply proceed to get it all recycled. Less hassle, and no cost (i.e. listing fees and/or shipping). My spouse would definitely be in favor of that, too -- get it out of the garage sooner!

Fortunately my county has an electronic waste collection event twice a year.

This said many countries are refusing to "recycle" electronic waste, notably China, because of its toxicity.
