I wish there were PSAs warning people about these things. I'm not trying to debate the legitimacy of SOME of them, but people need to be educated about who is REALLY making the money from these schemes.
Yesterday I got a text from someone *inviting* me to do an online party. For a variety of reasons, I'm not going to be throwing the party. The most important is that I actually like/love my family and friends so I'm not ever going to be inviting them to something like this.
Back in the day, I got invited to a lot of these types of parties. Some of them actually sold decent products, but they were always overpriced for what you got. I just took a glance at the big one (starts with a T), and I'm still just shocked by the prices.
So, I'm debating about blocking the person who sent me the text. We met a few years ago through another acquaintance, and she appears to be a nice person, but we're not even close to being friends. I don't really have a reason to keep her as a contact. Hopefully her feelings aren't hurt, but that's the way it goes.

(17,380 posts)can do petty well for themselves. But, yeah, with that territory comes being pushy (or "insistent", if you want to be nicer about it). Everyone else earns relative peanuts at the bottom and if you feel terrible about even trying to coerce your family and friends into purchasing overpriced products (I would too) then it's DEFINITELY not worth being part of the scheme.

(8,445 posts)Years ago one of my classmates from high school started emailing me her MLM bs. She and her husband actually got very wealthy from various MLMs. They owned a multimillion dollar house in wine country in California, and took many trips to various places in the world. I always wondered if they ever felt any kind of guilt for those at the bottom of the pyramid who fell for the dreams they were selling but went broke.
At first her emails were friendly, but when they took that ugly turn I quit responding. I started remembering why I never really liked her in high school.

(14,811 posts)When my boys played baseball they had to sell candy bars to pay for their uniforms. The lady that lived next door would always by a box from each & I would buy all the rest. I would have rather paid for the uniforms.
Same kind of thing with the Boy Scouts except it was popcorn, subs, or those nasty "pizza" kits.
Now every year I buy $20 in Girl Scout Cookies from my Granddaughter in PA & tell her to pick what she wants & keep them. Although I do buy those for myself whenever they set up in front of a store...
When my one sister was first married back in the mid 70's she used to have those "T" parties, but she never really had parties. She would call my Mom & Aunts & her friends & tell them she was having one but they didn't have to come if they ordered something. She just took orders & got her "gifts" for hosting.

I do buy from neighborhood kids, but I always wish they'd have better fundraisers. The high school near me finally started doing these little cards that offered discounts at businesses around town. They really weren't a ripoff for the buyer if the buyer remembered to actually use them.

(10,156 posts)They are filled to the fucking brim with conspiracy theorists, antivaxxer boss babes. They claim fucking essential oil or a certain keto friendly coffee will fucking protect you from covid. They exploit AA,NA and other types of groups of addicts, and take advantage of disasters to push their crap. MLM's should be banned from existence.
