back when I used to smoke many years ago I used to walk around a nearby lake at lunch break and smoke a cig. Apparently one day I walked too close to a blue jay nest and one came after me with grit and fortitude. I felt a stab on my shoulder and turned around and it was swooping up to get another shot at me and got me again. I decided to hurry off in a different direction.

I'm not saying that I quit smoking because of that bird but I did quit smoking not long after that.

I also quit walking around that lake so now I don't smoke but I also don't get any exercise.

...that are like that.
I've seen people get attacked by them when they get near those nests in April & May.
Super aggressive & relentless.
Nobody ever got really hurt, more than a scratch. But, still.
Those are some brave, tough suckers to attack something 150 times their size!

I see them on the course sometimes--they seem to live near ponds, and yes quite aggressive.

But, these birds have only the very top of the shoulder red.
It almost looks like the shoulder stripe on a football uniform. Really, bright red, too.

Here in Illinois we call them red shouldered. But, I can see red winged.
Must be an Illinois thing.
